Cute romance with a serious topic August 17, 2008 The book is written in 1st person, from Haven Travis point of view. Haven is the daughter of Churchill Travis, the guy from Sugar Daddy. Haven meets Hardy Cates at Gages' and Libertys' wedding reception and they have a steamy encounter in the wine cellar. But Haven is engaged to Nick Tanner, a guy her family doesn't like. Haven gets married to Nick anyway and she ends up in the marriage from hell.
The romance between Hardy and Haven starts after 1/3 of the book - a lot earlier than the romance in Sugar Daddy. Sugar Daddy was pretty much all about Liberty with a little bit of romance sprinkled in. Blue-Eyed Devil is focused on Haven and her development too but the love story plays a way more important role than it did in Sugar Daddy. The book wasn't an easy read either and Haven has to go through some rough stuff before getting her happy end.
I thought the romance between Haven and Hardy was cute. I thought he was more likeable than he was in Sugar Daddy and Gage got a lot of points too However, I couldn't get over the fact that it's weird, that Hardy hooked up with Libertys sister-in-law... After the stunt he pulled at the end of Sugar Daddy and the whole Liberty-Hardy fuss I just couldn't believe that this should have worked out without tension.
Not as well devolped as her historicals August 14, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with some of the reviews that having read her historical novels, the characters in this Blue Eyed Devil were not as well-developed. This seemed just a so-so modern day romance novel. The kind that gets easily forgotten after one reading. Books that I really enjoy I will read over again, including some of Ms. Kleypas' historical novels. But trying to write contemporary romance is not as fulfilling to me. It's almost as if the book was rushed through to get to the publisher. Try reading her earlier books and you'll see what I mean.
Enchanting Review: Blue-Eyed Devil August 13, 2008 BLUE-EYED DEVIL-Travis Family #2 LISA KLEYPAS Contemporary
Rating: 5 Enchantments
Haven Travis is the daughter of one of the richest men in Texas. Most people believe she is just a spoiled little rich girl; they don't know of her resolve to live with or without her family's money. Hardy Cates grew up rough; hard-work and determination creating the successful businessman he is now. Haven's decisions have shaped her personality and her life. After leaving an abusive relationship she is ready to learn to live again. But is Hardy man enough to teach her trust and love or is he just another roughneck, out to take advantage of her?
I like knowing the whole story behind a character, following her throughout her life, not just catching bits and pieces in flashbacks or conversations. I love following Haven through her struggles, knowing that she will find a new beginning, even if she takes the long way to get there.
And Hardy, (oh, what a man), is so dang yummy! We first met him in SUGAR DADDY, where Liberty Jones (now Travis), had a huge crush on him while growing up. He was always such a gentleman, and even back then knew what he wanted. We had a rather upsetting taste of the man he grew to become, but fortunately it was brief and didn't delve deeply into the reasons for his actions. Now we learn how he redeems himself. He's a man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. He is very confident, and he faces his own fears and strives to overcome the man his father was in order to become the man that he wants to be.
Haven and Hardy's story is very emotional. It touches on more than just two ordinary people meeting and falling in love by presenting two people who've faced unbelievable conflicts and have battled their way to the top and to each other.
I love Lisa Kleypas' contemporary voice. The depth and perception she brings to the characters is outstanding - she makes you feel like you know them personally, as if you could call them up on the phone to meet for lunch. She brings you into Haven's life, making you feel and understand her emotions and what drives her to be the person she is. I laughed out load, shed a few tears, was incredibly ticked-off at the "meanies", and sighed with passion as I read this engrossing tale. I truly enjoy Lisa Kleypas' contemporary works, and greatly look forward to visiting the Travis family again in the future. blue eyed devil August 8, 2008 loved loved loved this book. it was funny, smart, and i could not put it down. definitely worth the late night and tired morning.
One of Her Best! August 2, 2008 After reading "Sugar Daddy", I thought that Kleypas was just better at historical novels. I thought it was good, but not great. "Blue Eyed Devil" on the other hand, I could not put down. The action moved along, the story was compelling, and the characters were very likable. Great summer READ!
