Always reliable June 9, 2008 I have found that Pimsleur is the most reliable audio-based language learning company and this CD set is no exception. Have tried several other product companies that did not compare well.
Great if you don't know much spanish April 15, 2008 I knew a little, maybe 100 words in spanish if you include taco and numbers. I really liked this CD and the price is right. "Where is the hotel, do you understand, good afternoon, I'm from Los Angeles," etc. Good stuff. Yes it does go slowly, there is time to say the sentence, to break it into components, to say it yourself, and then those words are used later to build on new phrases. For me it was perfect because I took spanish many years ago. However I think it would be a better package for real beginners if the CD included a page with the text written out so you could see the words written.
Does not deliver on its promise, but good accent practice February 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
"I want 2 beers," "Where's the bathroom?", and "Let's eat in the hotel." Oops. I just gave away the ending. AFter 8 lessons, that's about all you'll learn in terms of content. It does NOT deliver on its promise to teach how to hold a real conversation in Spanish (I doubt I will ever hold a conversation like the ones in their examples). But it did give me very good practice in pronouncing the accents properly. If you've never learned any Spanish, this could be a good way to start and to build confidence in your ability to learn it; then go learn some real content elsewhere.
Disappointment January 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It was a disappointment. The Spanish spoken was hard to understand, naturally, as I'm a Spanish beginner. It would have been helpful if the words had been spelled out but that wasn't done.
After struggling with two lessons I donated it to the library book sale.
Pimsleur Spanish short version is affordable and great for getting started September 16, 2007 Pimsleur Quick & Simple Spanish is an affordable alternative (only about $20.00) to the full version, which is very expensive.
I have found this makes a great gift for a friend who is thinking about learning Spanish. It helps you get started, and you really do learn quite a lot. If you decide to continue after completing Quick & Simple, you can go ahead and buy the full version, and you haven't really lost that much.
I am not a language expert, but I am told that experts highly recommend Pimsleur, especially for its use of repetition as a learning tool. But don't get me wrong, it is really a lot fun and gets you speaking well quickly.
Pimsleur is excellent for helping you get the pronunciation right. This is especially important for the vowels, so you don't sound like a total gringo. I am frequently commented on my Spanish pronunciation, although it is not perfect and likely never will be.
