Amazon.com The long-running series Avatar the Last Airbender comes to a dazzling conclusion in Book 3 Fire, Volume 4. Poised for quite a number of episodes (seen in previous volumes) to go to war against the tyrannical Fire Nation, Aang the young Avatar and his cohorts must now bring down the Fire Lord and his army, or watch them ramp up their destructive powers during an imminent solar eclipse. But there's a lingering question only Aang can answer: can the Avatar, who has never killed anyone, bring himself to take the Fire Lord's life? That is what he must do, according to Zuko, the Fire Prince who has thrown in his lot with Aang and the latter's friends. While Aang is sorting that out--receiving various wisdoms from past Avatars and advice from a giant turtle-lion creature--Zuko and Katara take another leg of the battle by confronting Zuko's crazed sister. Meanwhile, Sokka re-asserts his latent talent for commanding dangerous missions as he and earth-bender Toph attempt to sabotage Fire Nation airships. The final episodes on this disc are thrilling, in no small part because they have been so long in arriving. Before those, however, there are a couple of interesting chapters to get through, including "The Southern Raiders," in which Katara attempts to exact revenge for the disappearance of her mother. As always, there's some comic relief, in this case "The Ember Island Players," in which our heroes experience the ignominy of watching some of their previous adventures become a ridiculous, staged play. --Tom Keogh

Awesome August 29, 2008 This dvd is awesome!!!!!!! I enjoyed every episode. I recommend this for young and old and I am 34. My kids love this show. Just so sad it had to end.
My family loved it! August 25, 2008 Our 5 kids have really gotten into Avatar and were very excited to get this DVD when it came out. They all loved it and watch it over and over.
Closure August 22, 2008 Volume four takes the viewer through the last six episodes of the Avatar cartoon series. Avatar has been a quality cartoon from day one, and does not disappoint: if you keep in mind that is a cartoon, and nothing more.
In the Southern Raiders, Katara and Zuko take a trip to confront the demons of her past. Katara is forced to choose her path, and goes through some character growth here. Zuko's response to it in the end delivers a question Aang can't answer.
In the Ember Island Players, the kids watch a play chronicling their journey. They each (well, except Tuff) see a piece of themselves they're not entirely comfortable with. No one except Aang seems to do much soul-searching over it, so its value is only in poking fun at the main characters, which I actually enjoyed.
Sozin's Comet is a four-part episode. Aang agonizes yet again. Everyone says he has to kill the Firelord, which goes against everything he's ever been taught. He goes off on his own to meditate. Everyone looks for him. Yeah, I know, we've seen this before.
Aang gets alot of advice he doesn't particularly like, but comes to accept. Meanwhile, the other kids prioritize, and get their acts together to do something about the Firelord's plans.
When the Firelord comes knocking, Aang is ready to face him. Here we see Aang (and bending in general) doing things we've never seen him do. He comes into his own as the Avatar. Even before going into the Avatar state, he shows that he really is a master of the four elements. It's a cartoon, but it's cool. Meanwhile, Zuko and Azula go at it.
Aang goes into the Avatar state and unleashes hell. Then he does something even all the avatars of the past didn't know was possible. Katara pulls a final trick out of thin air and shows herself a true master of waterbending.
There is rarely a cartoon that comes along and pulls me in like this. Entertaining, clean, action-oriented fun that anyone in the family can watch. The characters grow in skill and maturity throughout the series, and the stakes keep climbing, right up to the end. I give this conclusion four stars.
Avatar book3 vol4 review August 18, 2008 Wow, great finale to an excellent series. Again the show brings action and adventure to our home. As always it is done in a fashion that is acceptable for our kids and entertaining for us parents.
And so it ends... August 9, 2008 A satisfying end for the Avatar. I always will wish for more, but what I got was good.
