5 out of 5 stars Best in it's class for beginners   April 16, 2006
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

As very beginner, I rented 4 videos from the Library, this is definitely the best one. I think that "basic strategies" and "top 10" were so valuable, that I'm going to buy the DVD to reinforce those basics for the next several month. The information is extremely well prepared and clearly articulated, (unlike many other videos). This DVD along with Anna Duke's are great for building fundamentals, each is better in different aspects, so it's hard to tell which one was more helpful; however, both are way above the rest of the pack.

Started out with "there are four suits in a deck"...lol...even I know that one....but, it quickly got to the point. It shows pointers and how to play other kinds of card games to...I thought that part was great! It arrived in a reasonable amount of time and in great shape. No regrets.

5 out of 5 stars "Poker for Dummies," An Excellent Choice for Learning Poker   August 12, 2005
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

This poker DVD won't teach you how to be a world class player; it probably won't even teach you how to be profitable, but you will learn how to play poker. So if you want to learn the rules of poker, basic strategy, and poker etiquette, then this DVD is an excellent choice for you. This is the best learn to play poker video I've ever seen.

The video contains 7 segments: Poker Basics, Texas Hold'em, Central Hold'em Strategies, Bluffing, Tells, Top Ten World Series Secrets and Home Games. The layout and presentation of the information is excellent. There are helpful graphics, well scripted dialog, and easy to see cards and chips.

Poker Basics gives a general overview of the rules and lingo associated with poker. In the Poker Basics section you will learn the difference between "bet" and "check." You will also be shown many different poker hands and taught how they are ranked (ie which hand wins).

In the Texas Hold'em section you will be guided through a few hands as the hosts explain the mechanics of the game. The explanations will help you from making common novice mistakes like acting out of turn or not toking the dealer when you start playing.

The bluffing section is very short. However, the DVD is so basic that there isn't too much to get into. Tells sections will give you useful information for playing real money games with other people. The 10 most common tells are shown. Unlike most poker DVDs, the acting isn't that bad. The tells in the DVD look like tells I've seen in real life.

The top ten world series secrets section gives a quick list of 10 tips. Each tip is read by Chris Moneymaker and written on the screen. After each tip is mentioned, a brief explanation is given. The tips are solid and will help you avoid many of the common traps that new players fall into.

While the DVD focuses on Texas Hold'em, the home games section describes a few other poker variants. The games are shown with actual chips and all of the cards face up. The games taught are Omaha High, 7-Card Stud, and 5-Card Draw.

This DVD gives the complete poker dummy a solid base which will allow him/her to sit down at a poker table and play without asking tons of questions or looking like a complete novice. If you already have a solid understanding of how the game is played this DVD might not be for you.

2 out of 5 stars Basics, bad hosts, and little else...   December 28, 2004

Chris Moneymaker is quick to tell you two things. First, that is his real name. Second, that he is a world champion poker player. After that, this DVD is devoid of much information. Yes, they explain a couple of games in a "how to play" format. But as far as tips to make you a better player, or better yet a winner, not so much.

(...)It's kind of like you gambled and lost.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth buying   December 26, 2004

All they tell you is the basic's of the game like position, blinds, hands like a flush or a pair and they get into some tells but they don't really get into the strategy of the game like knowing when to bluff or reading hands. If you really need to know whats in this dvd your better off asking someone. It was way to basic for me.
