Book Description ". . . the essential first step for all couples planning to sail away; this is a must-read."--Paul and Sheryl Shard, authors of Sail Away! "Life afloat nourishes my heart, my head, body, and soul in ways that have enhanced all aspects of my life personally and professionally. I have discovered ways of sustaining my sense of purpose both on land and while cruising that have enabled me to embrace the cruising lifestyle."--Debra Ann Cantrell The human quest for change is constant. As existing dreams are realized, new dreams take their place. On one level, Changing Course is a straightforward, step-by-step examination of pursuing your partner's dreams and joining the seagoing life. On a deeper, more spiritual level, it addresses the levels of change we encounter in everyday life and how--through the experiences of numerous women who have gone before--we can rise through those levels of change to achieve ultimate fulfillment and satisfaction. Changing Course chronicles the odyssey of making a major lifestyle change from land to sea from a woman's perspective. The moving and often poignant thoughts, feelings, and experiences of more than 100 women illustrate the decision-making process that enabled most of them to move from resisting the change proposed by their partners to embracing the cruising life. It is an inspiring examination of the highs, lows, and day-to-day drama of changing one's life in a fundamental way. From the common fears that prevent individuals from taking risks to the interpersonal dynamics that affect couples and relationships, this one-of-a-kind book explores the phenomenon of change and the growing lifestyle change movement. This thought-provoking and highly personal book explores what women stand to gain when they set forth on such a journey--and what they stand to lose if they do not.

Its more for women who are married than single women/men July 14, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Contrary to what the title Changing Course : A Woman's Guide to Choosing the Cruising Life says, this isn't really a book for women who are single, don't care to have a partner etc. Its for women who are married and basically the issues that a couple will have when living on a boat in such small living quarters. Am still looking for the book someone has written, that deals with the single person who chooses a compact life living on a boat, much like we did when in college. But if you can over look what I consider marriage advise (after 37 yrs I am now a widow) and pick the bits of advise that are useful as far as actually living on a boat as your main home, then its worth a read.
Floating Marriage Counselor November 10, 2005 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
A little less psycho babble and a bit more logistical information would have suited me better. Ms. Cantrell spends the majority of the book being a relationship/marriage counselor, and though it's true issues become larger in smaller spaces, there are more issues for women cruisers than just their relationship dynamics. As I said, practical logistical information would have suited me better.
Fast Read and Very Helpful October 14, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I read this book in a day, it was very interesting and informative. It gives some great advise about what to think about before you go cruising whether you're totally into it or apprehensive.

When you asked what your wife thought about buying a bigger boat and sailing away, was your suggestion received enthusiastically? If not, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It is worth its weight in gold. It will answer all her questions, and it will give you a better understanding of her point of view, and let you know what you need to change about yourself to help get her on board.
Changing Course: A Woman's Guide to Choosing the Cruising Li November 30, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
An excellent book on making the transition from the current life you know to one of great change and adventure. Debra Cantrell brings forward all the pros and cons that she and other women in her study experienced in choosing the cruising life.I felt that this book would be a great source of information and inspiration for women faced with this life changing decision. From my prospective, it provided me with a greater understanding of what my wife was struggling with in making my dream of cruising a reality. Through our discussions surrounding this book, we have now reached a common goal of cruising that will be exciting for both of us.
