Got me started! May 16, 2008 This book turned out to be my inspiration to break out my late-mother-in-law's sewing machine and teach myself to sew. So far I've made two cute skirts and plan to make more for the summer. The book has very good instructions and really neat ideas. The only thing I wish this book had more of was illustrations/diagrams. It's great to be able to make cute skirts with awesome fabrics that you would see in places like Anthropologie for an exorbitant amount of money.
BRILLIANT! May 15, 2008 This book has been one of the best sewing books I've ever bought. I was able to do something I never imagined; sew my own fitted skirt just for me and my odd body shape. I'm so pleased that I even bought another copy for my little sister. I highly recommend this book for beginners...even more established sewers. It's got some very sensible advice and all of it is written in a way that is easy to understand. Very pleased.
Intuitive way of sewing, but still very practical. May 14, 2008 As an avid knitter, I thought sewing patterns would be as detailed and thoroughly tested as knitting patterns. They're not. I was about to give up on sewing, since I'm not a spacial/math thinker and all of the instructions are so complicated and leave stuff out (!!), but this book saved me from giving up on sewing entirely. All I really want to make is skirts, and this book shows you how to make skirts to fit you. There are good descriptions of how to calculate your measurements and how to draw directly onto the fabric. I don't enjoy the 'process' of sewing as I do knitting, and all I wanted was to make skirts that fit, and make them fast. As long as you know how to thread a machine, this is the only book you will need to make skirts. I'm not a sewing afficianado, all I want are cute, well-fitting skirts, and this book delivers.
Awesome Book! May 11, 2008 The skirts presented here are really cute -though there are a couple I definitely won't make, but we are all different in our likes- that's why this book is so great, the posibilities are endless.
Also, the author gives you plenty of information on how to do zippers, darts, bias tape edges and so much more.
I'm super happy with this purchase!
Worth A Look Even If You're a Veteran April 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was hesitant to buy this book after reading reviews because it seemed a bit simple. When it arrived, I nearly dismissed it because, yes, it WAS simple. Clearly geared towards beginners, the book takes you through all the steps for making skirts.
However, as I put it aside and started making some skirts myself without a pattern or a book, I found I needed to look little things up here and there -- when do they recommend I put in the facing? what are my finishing options? Turns out this is a pretty good reference book even if you don't use the patterns at all.
I was going to give it away as a gift after I saw how easy it seemed, but I think I'll keep it.
