Product Description
It’s simply breathtaking: no other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality, reinforced by a simple palette of black on white. Laurie Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, while selected artists’ notes shed light on how and why they choose to interpret this challenging subject.

Wonderful book July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just like the title indicates--it is a great selection of ceramic animals by contemporary artists. There is everything from realistic to bizarre interpretations of domestic, wild and farm animals, even includes a few bees. Like other books in the Lark ceramic "500" series, it is not a "how-to" book but rather a varied collection that inspires. A great buy!
Clay Animals-an overview July 2, 2008 A good assortment of animals in clay but somewhat disappointing in its scope and styles. Good reproduction, but just misses that elusive "something" to make it a really great book for reference. Still a good addition to the serious ceramic artist's library.
Great Book June 4, 2008 I love this book! It is a great collection of contemporary ceramic sculpture by outstanding artists. I recommend it for animal lovers, ceramic artists, and appreciators of sculptural ceramic art. This is a great book for inspiration and enjoyment. Just be advised that it does not include projects or techniques. If you are looking for instruction in how to create animal forms in clay, you will not find it here.
for you May 18, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a potter I do not do this type of sculpture and thats why I like this plucky little missive from the far side.Every artist has a few unexplored fantasies leaping into view ,this book does an admirable job of taking you on safari.100 excellently rendered photos from about 250 artists .Originally I did not like the book because compared with the Lark publication 500 Bowls which I bought at the same time and have referenced extensively ,this book gets pulled out occasionally and that brings up why I wrote this review. I have always confined my reading of ceramics to professional/trade periodicals like Ceramics monthly, and the like.My teachers, mostly academics, in the 70s taught me to do so. With the internet you are free to be more creative with fewer resources. [...]

I love this series from Lark. There are so many inspiring photos and it is a great way to learn new artists. I have almost the whole series!
