Product Description
…they’re frighteningly adorable, and they’re about to conquer the world of kids’ crafts! Influenced by the popularity of Japanese anime, video-game culture, and urban illustration and design, lovable plush monsters have become a big new phenomenon. Yet they’re so simple to sew that kids can do it—as long as they have this book, the only one of its kind created just for children. Just take fabric, a needle and thread, and stuffing to make one of a dozen cute, odd, and irresistible projects: creatures fashioned from old clothes, sporting Velcro faces (change expressions everyday!), and that even do double duty as mp3 player covers, backpacks, and pillows. Sidebars offer amusing information about the critters’ names, skills, and tastes. Not only will kids have fun, they’ll learn how to work with patterns and master basic hand and machine sewing skills. And, because encouraging creativity is so important, the guide suggests variations so children can make one-of-a-kind creations. Featuring the illustrations and monster designs of John Murphy, author of Stupid Sock Creatures!

Great Ideas July 22, 2008 I have purchased other plush toy books and found this an inspiring and interesting book. It has a wide variety of styles and types and lots of ideas to help stimulate your own imagination. Colourful and eye catching with patterns as well. A variety of degrees of difficulty to challenge.
Monsters with a purpose May 25, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
There are so many books on how to make plush monsters available at the moment, that the existence of this book hardly seems necessary. However, of all of the plush monster books I have seen (including "Plush-o-rama", and "Stupid Sock Creatures"), this is my favourite. "Invasion of the Plush Monsters" stands out from other plush monster books that I have seen because the monsters in it are both cute and functional. Sure, some of the monsters have no purpose other than the fact that they are toys, and that's fine, but other monsters double as bags, door hangers, cell phone covers, purses, slippers and hats, making this book more appealing to more experienced craftsters, like myself, who don't have room in the house for any more toys (although I keep making them, nonetheless). Even the monsters that are just toys stand out from those in other books in their innovation. For example, one of the toys is a spaceship with pockets to hold four little aliens, so that the aliens can ride in the spaceship.
This is a well presented book, it is a full-color hardback with photographs throughout, and the clear instructions should make these projects suitable for advanced beginners to intermediates. The toys in this book are made from a range of different fabrics, but mostly from fur-fabric and fleece, and most projects can be made by hand (although a sewing machine is recommended in some cases). The only drawback of this book is that the patterns are not shown full-size, but given the size of the toys, this is more or less inevitable and the author makes resizing these patterns as easy as possible by giving the percentage enlargement required (so that you can just punch this number straight into a photocopier).
