5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book   February 5, 2008
The title review says it all! Definitely recommend to other hunters and even non- hunters

5 out of 5 stars A philosophical approach to the sport of hunting...and life!   January 14, 2008
I bought this book for my husband last year for Christmas. I wasn't sure if he would read it because it wasn't a book about hunting techniques. Not to mention, my husband usually reads magazines or newsletters, so I took a gamble.

Before I wrapped it, I skimmed through it, and I was blown away. The author is a great writer, but it wasn't only for that reason.

I am from a very hunter un-friendly state....the great state of New Jersey. We (hunters) are routinely attacked from all sides by the most zealous of the non-hunting public...namely animal rights groups and, in some cases, our own Government representatives (Governor Corzine, for one). We are called everything from trophy hunters to killers...and everything in between. These groups accuse us of being irresponsible, cold hearted, cruel, murderers, inhumane...you name it.

This book really gets to the heart of what I, and my fellow hunters, are all about. A non-hunter who picks up this book may walk away with a different feeling of what I do....I'm not saying they may condone it, but they will understand me better by reading this book.

Most of us who hunt do so for the right reasons...love of the outdoors, appreciation for wildlife and their habitat, and respect for the traditions and skills of the sport....if you are such a hunter, this book will definitely speak to you. As hunters we are stewards of the environment...and the point is expressed so eloquently in this book.

My husband read it all in one sitting...he loved it. He closed the book, looked at me and said "This [holding up the book] is exactly why I do what I do. He nailed it on the head." And my husband has shared it with all his hunting buddies, who all got something from it as well.

I also urge wives who don't hunt and can't understand what all the fuss is about to read this book...you'll probably have a new respect for your husband's passion, and to quote my hubby understand why he "does what he does."

2 out of 5 stars Buy the paperback edition instead!   December 18, 2007

I give the paperback edition 5 stars, but the gift edition is not the same. It only contains short, choppy excerpts from the actual book. The book is short to begin with, but the gift edition can be read cover to cover in about 15 minutes. From Amazon's description, I thought the gift edition was the same as the original, with additional artwork thrown in. I was wrong. I am only sharing this so that others can take this into account when placing their orders. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for hunters & family/friends of hunters   November 12, 2006

This is a great book to read. Its easy reading and the author tells a lot of great hunting stories and relates them to real life and scripture. This is not just a book for hunters. It will also give anyone that must put up with a hunter, and their addiction, a better understanding of why the call of the wild has such a strong pull. The chapters are short and do not run together so it makes for good throne reading material. : )
