Amazon.com Biting, sometimes base satire and humor populates this 21-cut comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell of Phish, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Hi Fidelity and Jesus' Son. The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy," Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru," and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." With often intentionally droll and dumb humor smartly executed like a latter-day version of Bob & Doug McKenzie with a dash of Spinal Tap, this more-comedy-than-rock debut is likely to achieve cult status. --Katherine Turman

not bad, more funny than musical June 27, 2008 it's got a *bit* too much comedy/dialogue in it for me, but i really like it. doesn't get old fast, can listen to it a lot. wish there was a bit more music but it's still darn good.
Hilarious June 4, 2008 If you are a fan of Tenacious D, or liked the movie, you need this album.
Not simply a "comedy" album April 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yeah, it is side-splittingly funny. But it also rocks like crazy and the songs are well-crafted and tuneful.
Some people have said the spoken-word tracks get old after repeated listenings. Fine, take off all the spoken bits and you still have a solid album's worth of songs. I think the comedy bits only total about 10-12 minutes.
Songs like "Wonderboy" and "Tribute" are literally as good as it gets in rock music. They are classics and hold up well against just about anybody.
Some people complain that numerous songs are very short, clocking in at about one minute or so. Well, I guess those same people have a problem with quite a few Beatles songs - especially on albums like the White Album. Those same people would have to totally denigrate most of the long medley on "Abbey Road". There is nothing wrong with a short song, as long as it is a good short song.
And yes, I do realize I was talking about the Beatles and Tenacious D in the same breath. They deserve it. The D are rock gods and this album is gift to we mere mortals.
whole greater than the sum of its parts April 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
tenacious d is the greatest rock band of their genre and this album as a whole is a masterpiece, but after time it loses its appeal and if you take any of the tracks away from the whole they suffer, also not that it matters but because of all the cussing you really cant play anywhere outside the privacy of your own vehicle oe residence but their all minor details,so if you want a good rock band with a ittle comedy and you dont mind foul language than this cd is for you.
Most Excellent Band December 18, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
