5 out of 5 stars Complete and practical, help introducing mental management   September 4, 2000
Even if this book will be a great tool for a coach, I recommend it especially for pitchers who are responsible for themselves or who don't benefit from a personal pitching coach. You will learn what to do for conditionning your body and establish the volume of training. Practical isn't it ? Tom describes VERY precisely the wind-up motion with a lot of PICTURES, but it lacks some tips and experience-sharing. No point seems to be more important than the other. Everything is at the same level of importance so it is hard, without drills, to know if we have the right to beat the rule somewhere ! The grips, pick-off and fielding mechanic are more than under-covered. Some books are now specialized in pitching mental approach. However, this book is an invaluable tool for an aspiring pitcher to create a consistent (and simple) mental frame. Mental feedback is greatly covered for an all-around pitching book ; practical check lists are given. A step-by-step approach is provided in order to emphasized the one pitch at a time reality. Practical isn't it ? Try it, adapt it, become conscious of the process of pitching even if you don't want to read bible on sport psychology. The mental chapters are more complete than "The Pitching Edge" study. IDEAL for pitchers who want something else to improve their preparation.

4 out of 5 stars The Winning Pitcher by Tom House   April 24, 2000

My college baseball coach gave me this book to read my freshman year. It gave me very good examples of workouts as a pitcher. It is written in very plan language, with many pictures.

I also gave this book to a couple of my pitchers at the college level when I started my coaching career. I would recommend it to coaches and players from the junior high through college level.

I improved drastically after following the directions in the book. I only pitched one varsity game in high school but in college I made All conference two years in a row and was invited to several major league pitching mini camps.
