Product Description
Many consider the Yankees to be the gold standard of baseball franchises. Here is the book to accompany that legacy: The Ultimate Yankees Companion, a new encyclopedia with all the Yankees information every fan will want to have.

This book has more stats than any Yankee diehard could ever hope for. From batting registers to pitching registers, from fielding stats to baserunning stats, and year-by-year and career stats for every pinstriped player are provided. Each manager, general manager, and even owner has a listing of how the Bronx Bombers did under their guidance. Relive where the Yankees ended up in each year?s pennant race (often at the top), read about the twenty-five greatest games in Yankees history, and see a year-by-year history of the team?s broadcasters.

The Ultimate Yankees Companion is more than just stats, though, providing new insights on some of the greatest players and best seasons in the team?s history. Each Yankee postseason appearance (and there are lots of them!) has its own special section too, with box scores, series evaluations, and postseason statistics. The Yankees have more than their fair share of Hall of Famers, all-stars, and post season award-winners, and each is highlighted and honored.

Even player development gets a close look, with an evaluation of draft picks and free-agent signings, as well as a history of the famous and trend-setting Yankee farm system. If it happened to, for, or with the Bombers, then the Companion has it covered.

A publication of Maple Street Press, distributed by Potomac Books, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of statistics on the Yankees   December 10, 2007
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

This is one of the most comprehensive baseball statistics books I have ever seen (though strictly restricted to New York Yankees personnel). (Of course, since I'm a Yankee fan, I'm more interested in the Yankees' personnel than other teams!) It has players, coaches, managers, even owners; it gives, for the players, both the traditional statistics and some of the new statistics being introduced by the sabermetricians (though, since Pete Palmer is a co-author, and he and Bill James do not agree on what the most valuable of the "new statistics" are, you'll get the ones Palmer favors and not James' of course).

Besides statistics, it has (at least for the Yankees) something I've been unsuccessful in finding up to now, a complete list of all the farm teams of the Yankees at all levels. It omits a few things I'd want to include (like uniform numbers; there is a nice book giving all those, though: "Now Batting, Number...: The Mystique, Superstition, and Lore of Baseball's Uniform Numbers" by Jack Looney and John Tremmel, which I'd advise buying if you want those) but it is generally very complete.

I do find one thing annoying. For players whose career was split between the Yankees and another team (or other teams), SOMETIMES he gives the complete year by year statistics and sometimes just the portion of the career spent on the Yankees. In the pitching statistics table, the authors indicate that the decision was made based on whether they played at least a third of their time on the Yankees -- strangely, it's the ones whose career was MOSTLY on other teams (like Alex Rodriguez!) that get only their Yankee statistics given year by year! As I said, the authors only say this in the pitching statistics table, but in fact it applies to the batting statistics table as well, and the "more than one third" is figured separately for non-pitcher players who also pitched. (This causes some really crazy anomalies; Babe Ruth's pitching stats are only given for his Yankee pitched games -- all 8 of them! while his year-by-year data as a batter are completely given!)

But the quibbles are few. This is a great book, and up to date (it already has all the 2007 data, and the authors even have Joe Torre's leaving the Yankees in there).
