 Not his greatest book October 9, 2008
Most of the reviewers have covered my feelings. All I could add was that I could tell that Mr. Francis didn't write this book alone. It seemed too "wordy" at times and seemed to make Mason, the police and most everyone involved seem pretty stupid. Found myself being very frustrated as the story went along.

I've been a Dick Francis reader for many years. I felt this book recycled lots of past devices used in better ways in past books. The young widower whose wife died due to a complication of pregnancy, the "frightener" are two that come immediately to mind. I've been buying the books as soon as they came out in hardcover, but I think I'll wait for paperback or visit the library for future volumes.

Another well written and researched book by Dick Francis. A good look into the judicial system of Great Britain, hence the name. Somehow I missed this novel when it was first published so I had the pleasure of reading two in a row, as I just finished "Under Orders."

My sister and I have both enjoyed reading "Silks" but feel that some of his other novels had better content. Feel that there was too much legal verbage instead of about racing and the horses. Will still recommend it.

Since Felix Francis has opted to extend the family franchise of racing mysteries, he has clearly done an excellent job of analyzing his father's work. He has then developed a formula to assure that all the elements are in the book, and then does the boring part: he writes it.
This book lacks the fun, the originality, the plot twists, that made Dick Francis a fascinating writer. True, to an American audience the "Silks" conflation is another piece of interesting anglophilia, but this story has been written before: entertainingly by Francis I, less so by Francis II. I suspect that I will not buy the third father and son collaboration.
