Book Description In Empowerment: The Competitive Edge in Sports, Business & Life high-profile personality Dr. Gene Landrum presents, in a self-help format, the 13 winning behaviors modeled by the 13 greatest athletes of the modern era. Landrum's research into the lives of the great entrepreneurs and athletes, supported by a growing body of evidence, suggests that eminence, whether in business or sports derives not from genetic superiority, but from winning behaviors and learned emotional dispositions. With a delightful blend of gifted story-telling and intellectual scholarship, Dr. Landrum has created a book that melds the recent discoveries in psychology and brain research with the dramatic performances of the world's greatest athletes. Charismatic athletes such as Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, Martina Navratilova and Tiger Woods are analyzed in psycho-biographical profiles that focus on the underlying motivations and behaviors of these preeminent personalities rather than on what they achieved. In this respect and in its connection to the recent research in brain function and psychology, Dr. Landrum's work is unprecedented in the extant literature on athletes and athletic technique.

Frankly speaking, if you still want to read or find out more about this book, I reckon you can try the Amazon online reader! January 21, 2008 I am most familiar with the published works of Gene Landrum, especially after having read many of his earlier works, namely,'Profiles of Genius', "Profiles of Female Genius', 'Profiles of Power & Success', & 'Entrepreneurial Genius'. They were relatively good, in terms of understanding & appreciating the psychology of success.
The author probably spent much of his remaining years, after having turned businessman (as founder of a chain of family restaurants) to educator, studying the innovative behaviourial patterns of successful people.
I have really enjoyed reading the refreshing insights & interesting anecdotes in his earlier books.
Unfortunately for this particular book, 'Empowerment', I am somewhat disappointed, as I don't seem find any fresh or exciting insights to deal with. Probably, he has ran out of steam.
In a nutshell, I reckon the central premise of the book, the way I see it, is more about 'mental toughness training', since much of the successful people interviewed have been athletes & other sports personalities. Of course, one can easily co-relate it to its application in other spheres of activity.
I have managed to glean the following so-called 13 'success principles':
1) value your differentiation; 2) be willing to fail big; 3) follow your bliss; 4) transfer breakdowns into breakthroughs; 5) tap into your instincts; 6) believe in yourself; 7) exercise your internal locus of control; 8) visualise your goal; 9) think strategically to anticipate outcomes; 10) ignite your competitive spirit; 11) focus on your strengths; 12) see an obstacle as opportunity; 13) get out of your comfort zone & move into the stretch zone;
My sense is that most people, like me, are already familiar with these stuff.
The only good thing I can say here is that the self assessments, included in the book & pertaining to understanding each principle, are still worth exploring, at least for the fun of it.
Frankly speaking, if you still want to read or find out more about this book, I reckon you can try out the Amazon online reader. It's free, but it's cumbersome, & sometimes, you may get to read all the pages.
A smoothly blended combination of scholarship and biography January 6, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Gene Landrum is the founder of the Chuck E. Cheese Restaurant chain and co-founder of Atari Computer. He is also a professor of the international College in Naples, Florida. In writing "Empowerment: The Competitive Edge In Sports, Business & Life", Landrum draws upon his many years of experience, expertise and success to identify and share thirteen winning behaviors that have enabled entrepreneurs and athletes to achieve excellent and eminence in their various fields of performance. Among the illustrative profiles provided are those of Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Martina Navratilove, Wayne Gretzky, Lance Armstrong, and Tiger Woods. Also drawing up cutting edge research in brain physiology, kinesthetics and psychology, Landrum explains just how and why these identified behavioral traits have contributed to success. Especially notable is the 13 self-assessments offered the readers to determine the degree to which they practice these winning behaviors in their own personality and conduct. A smoothly blended combination of scholarship and biography, "Empowerment" is informed, informative, 'reader friendly', and a welcome addition to personal 'self-help' reading lists and community library 'self-improvement' reference shelves.
