Product Description
Super Bowl-winning coach and best selling author Tony Dungy has had an unusual opportunity to reflect on what it takesto achieve significance. He is looked to by many as the epitome of thesuccess and significance that is highly valued in our culture. He alsoworks every day with young men who are trying to achieve significancethrough football and all that goes with a professional athleticcareer-such as money, power, and celebrity. Coach Dungy has had allthat, but he passionately believes that there is a different path tosignificance, a path characterized by attitudes, ambitions, andallegiances that are all too rare but uncommonly rewarding. Uncommonreveals lessons on achieving significance that the coach has learnedfrom his remarkable parents, his athletic and coaching career, hismentors, and his journey with God. A particular focus of the book: whatit means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offeringyoung men few positive role models. Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers Author: Tony Dungy with Nathan Whitaker Format: 260 pages, hardcover ISBN: 9781414326818

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon   August 30, 2010
Michael Taylor (Indian Trail NC)
"Uncommon" by Tony Dungy is an excellent title by a very successful coach not only by worldly standards, but more importantly, by spiritual standards.

Among the points covered include:

1. Character issues - honesty, integrity, courage, etc.
2. Loving your family.
3. Friendships - wisdom in selecting the right ones, mentoring, etc.
4. Reaching your full potential - career, money, education, thoughts, goals.
5. Your personal mission - substance over style, being over doing, following your dreams, balancing family/career/leisure/etc.
6. Influence is more important than image - being a positive role model, respecting yourself and others.
7. Faith - Dungy comes from an admittingly Christian background and does not hesitate to state his beliefs.

While some folks may have problems with Dungy's faith and his "preaching", he is quick to offer praise and credit to God, his family, and others who have been positive influences in his life. This approach is a refreshing contrast to the self-self-self-self absorbed orientation of several of today's "self-help" titles that suggest that your fate is totally in your hands and that you are the master of your ship. What about when life's storms rock your ship, who are you going to depend on then? Look to Jesus Christ! There, that's my mini-sermon!

A very readable title - I found myself completing the book in 2-3 sittings - the book's approximately 260 pages was a fast read.

Highly recommended. Read, enjoy, and be challenged!

5 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING   August 20, 2010
Tish
If you have ever asked yourself, " what am I doing wrong", this book can help you get it right. I am a female and I bought the book because I admire Tony Dungy. Little did I know how the book would change my life. My husband took the book from me and read it. It was such an eye opener for him, that our lives together have gotten soooooo much better. He is more attentive. He apologized for not helping me around the house and with our kids on a more consistent basis. Ladies, buy this book for the men in your lives. It will change them forever.... and make your life easier, happier, and more enjoyable. Thanks Mr. Dungy, you will never know how much I appreciate having an " UNCOMMON MAN"!!

5 out of 5 stars Character Building   August 15, 2010
Desiree A. Brown (St. Petersburg, Florida USA)
This is such a great book that my Small Group is doing a Bible Study on it, and yes, even us women! We all could use some learning or refreshment on what we know in the area of Integrity, Honor and Respect. Thank you Lord for sharing Your Wisdom with us through Tony Dungy. Thank you Tony for listening the God's Will for you in writing this book and the books to come.

5 out of 5 stars Selected Audience   July 20, 2010
Blake
This book is written specifically to counsel the male population. Although it has excellent guidance for us all, Tony wrote it more to guide the male reader.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in a long time.   July 20, 2010
Betty Lewis
This is the best book I've read in a long time. It tells you how you can help your children to succeed by being an involved and caring parent. It discusses how many children are leading their lives based on the standards of our society rather than what it really takes to live a successful life.
