Product Description
Enthralled admirers of Esmeralda Santiago's memoirs of her childhood have yearned to read more. Now, in The Turkish Lover, Esmeralda finally breaks out of the monumental struggle with her powerful mother, only to elope into the spell of an exotic love affair. At the heart of the story is Esmeralda's relationship with "the Turk," a passion that gradually becomes a prison out of which she must emerge to become herself. The expansive humanity, earthy humor, and psychological courage that made Esmeralda's first two books so successful are on full display again in The Turkish Lover.

Excellent! June 18, 2008 Mrs. Santiago keeps on with her life. Even I did not like at all her relationship with the "Turkish Lover," her life is just a reality now a days. I am amazed on her personal growth and how far she has moved forward. Her unconditional growth is an inspiration. She is a great and simple writter. Like her style.
Third times a Charm April 24, 2008 This book was hard for me to read. I tend to get emotionally involved in characters in a book and the abuse Esmeralda suffered due to her boyfriend was terrible for lack of a better work. In fact I have not read the book since, as I have her others. I can only imagine what it would have been like living it!
But wait! You still should buy and read this book.
The book picks up right where her last memoir "Almost A Woman" left off. We follow young Negi as she leaves home and moves away with her much older turkish boyfriend, all across the US. He is controlling and manipulative. He makes her do his homework, takes her paychecks, slaps her when she steps out of line. He's very jealous and insecure too. Once could argue she left her 'warden' of a mother to a 'warden' of a boyfriend!
The memoir isn't preachy though. She could be writing it as a warning to a young person not to get involved in a toxic relationship. Esmeralda states the facts just as they are.
Moving from city to city, meeting people was nice to read. Esmeralda is so descriptive in her writing you feel as though you are right there experienceing it yourself-I LOVE that about her writing. I don't want to give too much away. Please read this book.
I would reccommend you read her first 2 memoirs before you reasd this one.
A lesson about love and life. March 22, 2008 I just finished Turkish Lover and found it truly cathartic. Santiago's experiences and message is so needed for young women cross culturally, but especially for young women of color; so many of whom see very little self or cultural value. I've taught When I was Puerto Rican to sophomore high school students and thoroughly enjoyed watching the book speak to all of my students, but especially to my African American and Latina girls. I look forward to teaching the other installments to older students.
Excellent! January 8, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Esmeralda captivated me once more with this book. I am from Argentina and I can say that I found many similarities between both cultures. As far as "Ulvi Dogan", I think "Chiquita" found some kind of security by being with him along with the good and the bad. Ulvi found a smart woman that could help him somehow. Therefore, a vicious circle began that after 7 years was very difficult to break. I wish "Chiquita" coud have found out more about the "secretive" life of Ulvi but at the same time I don't think it would have made any difference.
I don't think that "Turkish lover" singles out one culture. There are many Ulvis out there from all nationalities and backgrounds.

Once Again, a Wonderful Book! December 31, 2006 Absolutely wonderful!! All the details, the emotions, the suspense of what Esmeralda would choose to do with Ulvi, made this one of the best books I have ever read. I can't wait to see if she'll write another memoir about her life after Harvard, how she met her husband and her experiences as a mother.
