Book Description
Is conventional masculinity hazardous to young men's health? Boyz 2 Buddhas proposes that mindfulness meditation can help male teens deal with the unhealthy pressures of growing up today. After examining high school football-a popular activity that evokes troublesome aspects of male consciousness and behavior-David Forbes describes a meditation and discussion group he held with urban high school football players. The students meditated in order to play football in the zone, a state of higher awareness. Along the way they also learned to live their lives in the same manner, resulting in a more mindful, healthy way of growing up to be men. The counseling model illustrated in this book blends popular culture with contemplative practice, and addresses young men's need for greater personal meaning.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Unusual but so pleasant   March 29, 2007
This is a great book that goes far beyong counselling young male athletes. Because of the mixture of theory and practice, and also for giving a central spot to spirituality, I think this is an unusual and uncommon book. It reminds me of the Phil Jackson's book Sacred Hoops because sports and spirituality are close in this book and reinforce each other, along the line made by Jackson (but in his case for professional sports).

Society in the western countries is changing and therefore the youngsters and teenagers are changing theirs views of what's worth in life. Values are not so certain as 50 years before. And when you want to make your own way, you have to be capable of knowing better yourself and not just trying, but doing, and making it.

I think this is a very nice experience from which educators from all around the world can learn much about counselling youngsters and teenagers. I hope I've invited you to read this book.
