Book Description
As a forward for the great Tar Heel teams of the late '60s and early '70s, David Chadwick had a first-hand view of legendary coach Dean Smith's winning formula on the court. In The 12 Leadership Principles of Dean Smith, Chadwick applies Smith's people-first methods for achieving individual success within a team framework to the business world, the community, the family, and beyond.

Chadwick also draws from the recollections of Mike Krzyzewski, Michael Jordan, Rick Pitino, and many others, revealing the profound influence Smith has had upon those who know him.

4 out of 5 stars Adds focus to good leadership   April 1, 2000

Dean Smith was the coach of the University of North Carolina/ Chapel Hill Basketball team for 36 years. This book was written by David Chadwick, one of his former players who is currently the Pastor of a large Church. He reflects upon his university experience with Coach Smith as well as the lifelong impact that experience has brought him. He adds the reflections and residual affection of many other UNC basketball alumni, some now quite famous like Michael Jordan, to emphasis how these particular 12 principles were operationalized though this man and this sport. The 12 principles are truly worth examining and applying in a universal way. I think it is clear that Dean Smith paid great tribute with the expression of his talents and skills, which contributed beyond an athletic program. The opportunity is presented to expand these into a formulation of leadership objectives that blend healthy values, long term vision and deep personal meaning. If you are not a basketball fan then the text could be somewhat tedious when wading through the illustrations. That notwithstanding, it is still relatively easy to enjoy the value of these principles and compare them with how you may be thinking, feeling or envisioning yourself and your management approach. This book can be made a study or a quick read, either way it is worth the time.

2 out of 5 stars The 4 Corners Disappoints   January 29, 2000

Disappointed in the effort. Didn't know whether I was reading a management theory book or "Pastoral Theory For Carolina Basketball Fanatics", Dean was almost to good to be a real person and Chadwick mixed too much of his pastorial experiences into the book so that you couldn't translate it to "us" in our work environments. As a Dean fan for over 40 years, a true role model, I just had a hard time trying to get to the last page. Very disappointing for the most part, even though I practice some of his principals even without reading the book, I really didn't find as much insight as I had expected. Mr. Chadwick needs to stick to the pulpit and not give up his Sunday job just yet!

3 out of 5 stars He is the greatest coach of all time, but...   November 27, 1999

This book definitely deifies Dean Smith. The fact that it's written by a preacher may have something to do with that. It's a fine book, it's just that you get the feeling that you can't really take anything in it seriously because the book is so obviously biased. The writing is not the best, but the stories are touching and definitely showcase Smith's leadership talents.

5 out of 5 stars A logical guide for leaders and followers alike.   October 11, 1999
6 out of 7 found this review helpful

In just over 200 pages,David Chadwick has presented a useful and interesting "road map" useful to leaders and to followers alike.

A few of the keywords Chadwick expounded on with logical meanings are, loyalty, honesty, family, team, vision, humility ,change, practice and mentoring.

David Chadwick has skillfully woven many of Dean Smith's unique leadership practices and philosophies along with Chadwick's personal experiences in a manner that can help a leader lead with confidence and a follower follow with effectiveness. He also presented it in a manner that the reader could read with enjoyment.
