5 out of 5 stars Lane Strikes Again   August 23, 2008

Simple means Simple. And that's exactly what this book is, simple: Simple to read, to understand, to implement. You can tell Lane had way too much fun writing this thing. And I had too much fun reading it. It really leaks Barry Lane. Being a third grade teacher and writing consultant for the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project, I find this book comforting. You know, like a fresh shirt out of the dryer. I've read all the great authors on the subject: Fletcher, Caulkins, Romano, Graves, just to name a few. Barry Lane brings it here. He brings the heat. He brings the human element, the element missing in today's schools. This book spoke to me in many ways. However, the recurring theme throughout the book, is that we need to teach kids on their turf, in their backyard. He truly believes that everyone can find their writing voice, given the freedom to look for it, EVERYWHERE.

I've recommended this book to all first year teachers and teachers new to Writing Workshop. It's blue collar in nature, but the message? Deep.

Read it, dude.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, witty, useful & empowering   August 20, 2008

This is an entertaining and useful guide for teaching writing to any student in any subject. As I read this book I tried out the activities with my students. These lessons were engaging and effective. My students buzzed with ideas for hours afterwards, often approaching me in the playground to discuss ways they could develop their ideas.
I am a hyper-busy teacher...show me an education professional who isn't?! I love this book for its sheer practicality, concrete ideas and positivity. Too often books about teaching writing are patronising and alienating. Barry Lane loves people and he truly believes everyone is a writer. This book is imbued with that philosophy and is a must for any teacher in any subject.
