Amazon.com First, the bad news for over-30 jocks: your body is more susceptible to physical breakdowns caused by exercise and athletic competition. It is weaker, fatter, less flexible, and may be showing signs of arthritis and brittle bones. So it reacts differently to injury, taking longer to heal and making reinjury more likely. Gee, thanks. The good news is that The Return to Glory Days is a guide to treating and preventing sports injuries in older athletes and helping them get back to their sports. Written by Morton Dean, TV news correspondent and lifelong jock, and Benjamin Gelfand, P.T., supervisor of the Nicholas Institute for Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma, this book is friendly and practical. You don't even have to know what your injury is called--just look up its body part and your symptoms. Information for each injury is organized into these sections: "Pain" (where, how, and when it hurts), "Locker Room Lingo" (medical terminology and jock talk), "Inside Story" (medical description), "Risk Rating" (how dangerous or permanent), "The Game" (likely scenario that caused this injury), "First Day Treatment" (what to do immediately, additional cautions), "Return to Action" (recovery time), and "Rehab and Prevention" (specific advice and exercises). Have this book handy if you want to stay active and competitive for many decades. --Joan Price

Not what I expected in the least February 4, 2002 As an athletic trainer, I purchased the book for another source in dealing with my athletes and their injuries. I am always looking for summaries of injuries that I might present to them that will put them at ease and help them understand the treatment protocols. I found that too much information was outdated in the book, which kinda goes along with the people who it is meant for. The book did mention plenty of common injuries, however, I would not tell my friends or family some of the treatments given in the book. Most being behind the times, and speaking of behind the times, some of the Locker Room Lingo used is ways outdated, get with the times.
The Return to Glory Days: My stocking stuffer solution October 27, 1997 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I heard Morton Dean interviewed on the radio about Return to Glory Days and was intrigued that he suffered more slings and arrows running, playing softball and tennis than he did covering the world's hot spots. Skimming through Return to Glory Days while in line to purchase it, I, for the first time, did holiday shopping before Christmas eve and bought 8 copies of Return to Glory Days for active friends and family members. The book reads like Mr. Dean's newscasts--straight-forward, easy to understand and just the facts.
The Return to Glory Days is the bible for injury prevention! October 21, 1997 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I picked up Mr.Dean's book after seeing him on a local talk show. What a fabulous idea--providing a treatment/reference book for common sports injuries for those of us that still think are bodies can do what they did when we were 18. It's very well organized and user-friendly. Thank you, Mr. Dean. I can guarantee these pages will be worn and tattered from use. And now I have the best "get well" gift for my friends that over-do that weekend workout and want a quick recovery.
outstanding and helpful September 27, 1997 I received a preview copy of this book and found it easy to read, easy to understand, funny, and best of all, it helped me treat my aching tennis elbow. The exercises are really helpful and I am finally starting to feel better. This book is really terrific.
