Book Description
In Discovering Voice, Nancy Dean creates a prequel to Voice Lessons specifically designed to teach the elements of voice to students in middle and early high school. The lessons on diction, detail, figurative language, imagery, syntax, and tone help students understand the concepts of voice in what they read and develop a strong, personal voice in their own writing.

Every voice lesson includes a quotation selected from a wide range of literature, two discussion questions, and an exercise that encourages students to practice what they have learned about the elements of voice.

Discovering Voice also offers a collection of quotations students can use to create their own voice lessons. Discussion suggestions for each voice lesson and additional activities for teaching voice enhance the scope and instructional value of the resource.

Each Discovering Voice lesson provides focused practice for a specific element of voice and takes only ten to twenty minutes of class time. The lessons fit well with any curriculum. As students work with the elements that comprise voice, they will improve their ability to critically analyze literature. Students will also learn to apply the elements of voice to their own writing, creating a clear voice of their own.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have for any English or Language Arts Teacher!   March 6, 2008

I have little to say except this is the single most useful book I have ever used in teaching English. It is comprehensive, simple, fast, and engaging. The lessons written within provide an outlet for an array of intelligences. If you ever wanted to teach your kids about figurative language or about syntax, or diction, simply using these 20 minute lesson plans will do it. My students have gone from not knowing what a verb is, to not only identifying the literal and figurative term in a metaphor, but using them in their own writing. It has made a difference in my students learning.

5 out of 5 stars Voice in Middle School Poetry   December 21, 2007

This is my first year teaching 6th grade language arts (or language arts in general, for that matter), and I began the year most nervous about teaching poetry. I mean, I enjoy poetry, but I've never really been taught how to read poetry, at least not in a deep way. I had ideas for teaching some of the techniques used in poetry (like similes, methaphors, and personification), but I didn't know how to read a poem and analyze it in any meaningful way. (And if I didn't know, how was I going to teach my students?)

To make myself feel better, I went online and purchased several books to help me teach poetry, including Discovering Voice. Of all the books I bought, this was BY FAR the best at giving me ideas for teaching the specific aspects of writing (diction, syntax, etc.). While the book does not focus specifially on poetry, the activities can easily be incorporated into a poetry unit. So far, I've only used a couple of the activities with my students, but all of them have worked very well. I especially liked the Introduction to Voice activities at the begining of the book, and my students really enjoyed relating voice in poetry to voice in art and music (which they are much more interested in at this point in their lives). I would definately recommmend this book for anyone who is interested in deepening their student's study of poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for teaching voice and style analysis   October 30, 2007

This book is very helpful in teaching style analysis (usually a dry topic) and individual voice to students. Students actually enjoy the activities and request more!
