Great book but incomplete - could have been five stars July 22, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great book of hikes in the Central Cascades (where I live). While I am already familiar with many hiking trails, the recent birth of our daughter means shorter, easier hikes in our near future and I purchased this book to refamiliarize myself with the trails I learned to hike on.
The book provides a basic guide at the beginning to help you pick hikes by geographic location or by difficulty and the authors subjective rating of the hike. Each hike has a page or more of information, starting with a brief summary, directions and key details, tips or warnings. For example, Franklin Falls is a great hike for beginners - except - there is a potentially difficult and dangerous rock slope to navigate at the end. The author warns of this which is fantastic - I knew from experience that this hike would appeal to less mobile hikers only to present them with a potentially impassable obstacle at the end.
Each hike also includes a basic topographical map that provides a very basic overview of the hikes path as well as an indication of elevation gain. Since this is a book of day hikes I see no need for a full topographical map and none is provided - a criticism of other reviewers that I do not agree with.
Overall this is a very good book minus one glaring issue. There are two hikes missing. I'm not sure which they are, because they are on the overview map but not in the book. A minor issue since the book is packed with hikes but it still disappointed me.
Poor maps and photos March 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is well written, but the maps are not the best. Also, some of the photos are blurry and could be much better. Its not a bad book and provides another point of view, but Beyond Mount Si: The Best Hikes Within 85 Miles of Seattle is a better book overall.
Normally the Day Hike! books are very good, but this one seems to need a revision with better photos and maps.
A great guide for the area January 6, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Mike is a talented writer and Central Cascades is another great guidebook by him. As with his other books this has come with me on many trips.
