 A Tear The Size Of A Baseball. August 30, 2008
Let me begin by saying that I really enjoyed the first three books in the Twilight series.
So I started Breaking Dawn and it almost immediately made me want to stop. I could care less about the wedding details, this book really is written for teenage girls, huh? I was about to get bored with the honeymoon when Meyers takes us to absurdity in her plot twist. I couldn't help but wonder if Meyers thought the plot was so twisted and unlike her main character that she decided to switch to another characters first person for 'Book 2'. I mean I like Jacob, I mean I really do (more thatn most of Meyer's fans probably), but I would have much preferred the books all be told from Bella's perspective. The pregnant Bella was to far a stretch for Meyer's to write I presume? That's fine, but lets edit some of these pages, does the pregnancy which doesn't last all that long, really have to take up so much of the book?
Then the baby, Renesmee? Let's look past her ridiculous name for a moment-oh wait, that is just too hard to do. Let me gasp, sigh, and roll my eyes. OK, back to my review. Jacob imprinting on Nessie (better name choice?). I saw it coming but how I wished Meyer's wasn't going to let me down in this fashion after the first two sections of Breaking Dawn had been such a letdown, but no, she goes through with it even though Leah was a better match in my opinion. I was hoping someone in the story could form a relationship the old fashioned way but I guess not. I can stomach Bella's overcoming of most of the drawbacks to the newborn stage but Charlie coming over. Are you serious? If I wasn't so interested in just how bizarre this book could get, I would have stopped reading pages ago.
So I try to overlook most of the bad silly things that happen and look at the positives for this tale as I am investing a lot of spare time into this 754 page book. Meyer's tries to fit the pieces together pretty well. I like the supernatural powers and even the wolf twist, I was even managing to accept the imprinting scenario as were Edward and Bella when the book was winding down-slowly-slowly-slowly through the Volturi visit when what do I come across but Jacob crying a tear the size of a baseball, a BASEBALL. This was it. I must have read this sentence 14 times. A baseball. Really. Well, that really tells me how sad he was at the prospect of losing Bella. Baseball (come back eyes, don't stay back there).
Baseballs aren't really huge, unless you have tears the size of them. Then they are just ridiculous. I would have cried from laughing if I didn't feel so inferior to these large, perfectly rounded tears of Jacobs. I am being insensitive, aren't I? Oh well, I can't seem to help myself.
Anyways, I had to get that off my shoulder. The book ended OK, I would have liked to have seen an actual physical confrontation between the Voturi and the rest of the vampires but I will take the ending she gave us. Hoping that it is the end.
Stopping at Eclipse was probably best, but ending now, you know with your "THE END" page and all it's finality at the end of Breaking Dawn is respectable.

Great twists. I laughed out loud while reading this book. Good balance between fun, drama, and suspense. I recommend reading the whole saga to anyone who is even slightly interested. Even the guys - you may be pleasantly surprised. Meyer's writing leaves nothing to be desired in her use of character and personality with humor laced throughout the conversations.
This book in particular was more graphic than the previous 3 but that detracted nothing from my experience.

Rebuttal to Criticism, in favor of Breaking Dawn August 30, 2008
I am a 28-year-old mother of four with a master's degree who read strictly classical literature until a friend gave me a copy of Twilight last year. I have since become a big fan of the Twilight cycle and The Host. I would like to counter some of the criticism I hear about Breaking Dawn and express my hope that Midnight Sun will continue at some point.
What kind of people have we become if we are skeptical about a happy ending and disappointed if a large chunk of main characters are not ceremoniously killed off? In defense of Meyer and the Twilight cycle, the characters suffered acutely throughout the arc of the story and it was refreshing to see sacrificing and moral characters obtain peace and rest.
How could the events of Breaking Dawn be outrageous in a fantasy world of vampires? How could the readership be surprised by events Meyer foreshadowed throughout he cycle? I thought Meyer's choice of events was much more interesting and justified the story much better than most of the fan's speculations did. If you want outrageous, improbable, unsatisfying, distasteful and disappointing, read the blogs full of fan's ideas before the release of Breaking Dawn. We must remember that the Twilight story began with Twilight, and Breaking Dawn is the culmination of the entire cycle.
Why is there criticism that there was no physical battle with the Volturi? I found it more accurate that power hungry people would seek under-handed ways to attack and weaken their foes, then cowardly flee when they saw it would be a fair fight. Meyer left us with the unsettling idea that the Volturi would have to be dealt with again later. I thought the battle of the minds was more interesting that ripping off a few heads would have been.
I was very pleased that Meyer showed us first-hand a vampire transformation and Bella's discovering her new powers. I was delighted that there was a way for Bella and Edward to have a family. (Yes, vampires can't get pregnant, but Bella was not a vampire!) Expanding the vampire world to include the Cullen's friends from around the world was interesting. Of course Jacob imprinted on someone; what an intriguing twist that it was Bella's daughter. Why shouldn't these characters be able to fight for what they want and deserve and find a way to get it? I thought Breaking Dawn was a satisfying culmination of all the events in the cycle, and Meyer's writing is exciting, passionate, and clever in the way she foreshadows events and links them together.
Meyer insists she writes only for herself and I hope she will continue to do so. Her unpretentious style is refreshing, and her world of moral and passionate vampires (or aliens) is intriguing. I can cheerfully accept these works for what they are: unassuming, creative and delightful storytelling; and couldn't disagree more with the petty and uninformed criticism I hear occasionally. The story is romantic, intense, gripping, but still filled with the zippy one-liners and quirky anecdotes we've all come to adore. As always, Meyer has us all over the spectrum of emotion.
To Stephenie Meyer: Thank you for telling your stories, they are exciting, uplifting and gratifying. I am sorry some unscrupulous jerk ruined the Midnight Sun experience for you and your millions of honest and adoring fans. I read the draft you posted on your website and was both moved and devastated (and hyperventilating!) I was moved by the insight into Edward's character, how ardently in love but how conflicted! How interesting to have all the details filled in! The experience from Edward's point of view is so very intense, I found myself wrapped up in your vampire world all over again. I was devastated it stopped before the meadow scene, and it's unbearable to think that I may never read it! I understand the way you are feeling and share in your disappointment. I hope that when you are ready you will return to this most interesting project. It is a story that deserves to be told. I hope you feel supported by the millions of fans who adore your work and appreciate your contribution to the reading world, which is a much more interesting place now, thanks to you!

Well, It was interesting to get to the Jacob's sight.
I got a lot of fun reading it.
Though I'm pretty not good at English, It only took me 3 days to read this
So I can say this book is interesting.
Opportunity to see that bunch of vampires party.
And new family of Bella.
However Just a moment I thought the story little bit gets too far.
I don't understand that Charlie was able to deal with newborn Bella easily like that.
It's your daughter who became totally different peson.
Yes, It is still Bella, But with that look. Could 'daddy' just can say
"Oh, this is my daughter Bella inside of her new body. No problem after all.", No, I don't think so.
And the baby? Wow, I think at that point, She little bit lost her point on
this story.
Or I simply I did.
And about Jacob, imprinted to Bella's daughter. So great, poor Jacob became Happy. But still odd.
Something is apparantly missing.
At that time Bella and Jacob didn't seem to be best friend.
I don't get it. They didn't seem to care about each other at that point.
I know at the end still best friend.
But I thought some kind of deep emotion was gone.
Well, you could say that's because of Jacob doesn't love Bella that way.
But still, Thare was something missing.
At least I thought like that.
Oh, well. But I did enjoy this book.
So what Could I say anymore.
