Product Description

"[A] well-researched, gracious and truthful account." --Georgian Bay Today

When her husband proposed living on a boat full-time, Debra Cantrell wondered what other women in her position had done and began a five-year study to find out what choices they had made and how it had all worked out. The result is Changing Course, a guidebook for navigating this odyssey. No matter what the outcome, each woman was strengthened by the experience.

In an era when "downshifting" is common and people are considering the benefits of simplified living, Changing Course is both timely and practical.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful   September 15, 2008
My partner and I have a long term goal of sailing on a liveaboard. I ordered this book to gain insight on the psychsocial aspects, not just from a technical aspect of sailing or outfitting a vessel. I have read several books related to those topics. I found this book to be an easy read, as importantly as sailing as a "team", it does provide insight to relationships on land as well! I would highly recommend this book as a relationships abroad book.

4 out of 5 stars Its more for women who are married than single women/men   July 14, 2007

Contrary to what the title Changing Course : A Woman's Guide to Choosing the Cruising Life says, this isn't really a book for women who are single, don't care to have a partner etc. Its for women who are married and basically the issues that a couple will have when living on a boat in such small living quarters. Am still looking for the book someone has written, that deals with the single person who chooses a compact life living on a boat, much like we did when in college. But if you can over look what I consider marriage advise (after 37 yrs I am now a widow) and pick the bits of advise that are useful as far as actually living on a boat as your main home, then its worth a read.

2 out of 5 stars Floating Marriage Counselor   November 10, 2005

A little less psycho babble and a bit more logistical information would have suited me better. Ms. Cantrell spends the majority of the book being a relationship/marriage counselor, and though it's true issues become larger in smaller spaces, there are more issues for women cruisers than just their relationship dynamics. As I said, practical logistical information would have suited me better.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Read and Very Helpful   October 14, 2005

I read this book in a day, it was very interesting and informative. It gives some great advise about what to think about before you go cruising whether you're totally into it or apprehensive.

When you asked what your wife thought about buying a bigger boat and sailing away, was your suggestion received enthusiastically?

If not, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It is worth its weight in gold. It will answer all her questions, and it will give you a better understanding of her point of view, and let you know what you need to change about yourself to help get her on board.
