4 out of 5 stars An outsiders opinion   August 16, 2007
This book was purchased as a gift for a goalkeeper in training. From what I can tell it has all the information he will need.

5 out of 5 stars FOR BEGINNERS OR EXPERIENCED KEEPERS   May 12, 2007

Whether you are a keeper yourself or coaching them, I highly recommend this book. It's a book for anyone who wants to learn the skills needed to be a top-notch keeper. The book focus on the key skills in a very comprehensive fashion: describing when the skill is used in game situations, how the skill is performed, and creative exercises for mastering the skill. These discussions are supplemented with photographs and illustrations. The author really knows what he is talking about. Read the book, then watch goalkeepers playing at the highest level of the game (such as in the world cup) and you will see the keepers utilizing the key skills detailed in "The Soccer Goalkeeper"over and over again.

I read the book front to back and overall was slightly impressed. A great book for new coaches or new keepers looking to understand the position.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Overview   October 7, 1998

There's a dearth of valuable technical instruction available for most aspiring goalkeepers, both in person and in print. This book provides an excellent overview of all aspects of goalkeeper play, from the physical fundamentals (catching, footwork, etc.) to positional play and the mental game (an extremely important topic that often gets little coverage). Mastery of the skills detailed in this book will make you a very good, skilled goalkeeper. My only beef is that the nuanced information and skills that separate the "very good" from the "world class" is not covered at all. I know that's a lot to ask, but if you're looking for the knowledge to put your game over the top, this isn't really going to help. On the other hand, if you're looking for a comprehensive guide to the position, or to find a reference touchstone for the "completeness" of your (or your player's) game, this is the place. Ultimately, a necessary resource for any serious goalkeeper.
