5 out of 5 stars Great Tomiki-System Basics   February 23, 2006
This is a fine book on the basics. Beginners, keep in mind that this is a Shodokan book. Should be very interesting to intermediate/advanced students of any aikido system.

5 out of 5 stars a wounderful book for all students of aikido   November 2, 2005

i think this book is a brilliant book for all students studying aikido and for students of all grades from beginner to advanced. this book is a book on shodokan aikido and even though i study tomiki aikido i found this book extremly useful for the recent katsura international championship in october 2005. this book is not a book for teaching the advance principles but to teach the basic principles of shodokan aikido because most books i have read are teaching the advanced principles and kata's but this book teaches the basic kata's and principles.i do really think anyone studing aikido would benefit from reading this book because when i read this book i really did benefit from it and it really has improved my aikido over the last couple of years. i would recomend this book to all students of tomiki & shodokan aikido.

I don't know about the book, but I have seen Sean Flynn compete in person several years ago. Studying Aikido for about 15 years, I can tell that his basics are still not yet firmly grounded. Just based on observation, I can not say I would recommend this book. I was very surprised to see his name on the cover while looking for some literature written by some of the true masters of the art.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for both beginner's and older students   March 7, 2004

While many books have been written about Aikido, and even Tomiki Aikido, few are as understandable or easy to follow as Understanding Shodokan Aikido. The book takes the reader through the fundamental exercises and skills of Shodokan Aikido in a remarkably clear manner. Other books impress with pages and pages of esoteric techniques that are seldom practiced. This short volume covers the basics of Shodokan Aikido as well as the material for the first two belt exams with helpful photographs and straightforward explanations. After over six years of studying Tomiki Aikido in both the US and Japan, I still find this book to be a helpful reference for reviewing the core lessons of Shodokan Aikido.
