Amazon.com As in the case of James Redfield's The Celestine Prophecy, once in a while a book comes along that unexpectedly soars to the bestseller lists simply because it feeds a specific spiritual hunger. Talking to Heaven is one such book. Based on the personal insights and memories of highly acclaimed medium James Van Praagh, Talking to Heaven offers comforting and startling stories about his contact with the deceased. Van Praagh could have used this text to prove that his gifts as a medium are authentic--the story about the deceased teenager who led his parents to his murderer is impressive (the result was a murder conviction)--but instead, Van Praagh offers spiritual and psychological comfort to those grappling with the loss of a loved one. He also helps readers develop their own means of talking to heaven. Even those who aren't aching for contact with the deceased will find Van Praagh's down-to-earth discussions of karma, the afterlife, and spiritual guides fascinating.
Book Description James Van Praagh is a nationally recognized medium, a frequent guest on television shows who has a two-year waiting list for personal appointments. But now he sets forth on the page his unique insights into the world beyond. Van Praagh's ability to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds was something he came to terms with slowly. By the time he reached his twenties he finally accepted the fact that he could provide proof of life after death by relaying specific messages containing names, places, and events known only to the people who sought him out--and to the spirits being contacted. He recounts here his experiences in helping grieving people come to terms with the loss of a loved one. The reader shares in many personal and profound stories, such as the devastated mother who finds reason to live after hearing the sweet message from her courageous little girl who had wasted away from AIDS. Or the son, filled with heartfelt sadness, who begs--from beyond--for his mother's forgiveness because he committed suicide. Van Praagh also offers readers means for recognizing and dealing with the harrowing pain of grief in a healthy manner, as well as showing them how they, too, can contact the spirit world and recognize spirit signs that a loved one is trying to attract their attention. Inspiring, moving, and reassuring, Talking to Heaven provides a connection to a spiritual world for which millions hunger--through the insight and wisdom of an extraordinary man.

A Gift : Talking to Heaven August 13, 2008 First, when you read anything from James Van Praagh, you have the sense that he's speaking directly to you. If you are a non believer, please read this book. I guarantee that by the time you reach the end of the book, you won't be so sure anymore. For those who do believe, it is a nice feeling to know that the ones we've loved are not lost to us and that they are continuing their journey.
no doubt June 29, 2008 I have no doubt what is in store for me after this life is done. I hope that someone like James is around for me so I can communicate with my loved ones when I am gone.
talking to the heavens June 13, 2008 very intense and hard to read and keep in tune with for me. like Rosemary Altea much much better !!
I will read this over and over again:) May 23, 2008 My mom passed away two years ago and my friend loaned me this book to read. I believe Mr. Van Praagh when he said he communicates with the spiritual world and I enjoyed his experiences he shared with us in the book. The book gave me a peace of mind that my mother is always with me and if I look close enough, I will see it in the messages or signs she sends me. Whenever I am feeling down, I pick up this book and remember the ways we are all connected between the physical and spiritual world.
The New Age at its worst February 19, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
Pandering, hypocritical, assumptive nonsense. Take a look at Van Praagh's resume and it's pretty clear that he communicates with the dead, alright: mainly Benjamin, Grant, and Jackson. He classifies mediumistic talents, drawing on stuff that was discredited a hundred years ago, like apports and ectoplasmic voiceboxes. Gag. He even has the audacity to mention that ectoplasm sometimes "looks like cheesecloth." I guess because that's exactly what its been proven to be. After rehashing all the same Sylvia Browne bunk about vibratory rates and spiritual planes, he has the nerve to bash the Catholic Church for some 20 pages, concluding "I still find it a bit unbelievable the Catholic Church teaches this stuff," and refers to Christianity as "mythology." Wow.
Pass this one by, even if you are a spiritualist. Van Praagh is a cynical charlatan and frustrated screen-writer. The genre holds many more satisfying reads for just about any persuasion.
