4 out of 5 stars Great book, I am impressed   August 17, 1999

The book introduces some of the basic training concepts that are being used by the West Ham United youth team. As a coach myself (coaching for 10 years, and having played in England), I Like what I see, and have decided to incorporate many of the drills included in the book as basic technique training for my 11 year olds. The techniques could equally be used by any age group, but I believe the book would be most beneficial with 10yr to 16 year olds.

One or two of the techniques may be a little too basic for some of the older kids, but with a little improvisation they can be improved upon, and the number of good drills far outways the basic ones. A few of the techniques could have been described with a bit more detail, but again one is able to improvise.

More than anything, I like the idea that the techniques are being deployed today by the top professional clubs, as this reinforces the techniques described in the book, and justifies my use of the book for my training sessions.

I read the book at my local library, and liked it so much that I decided to purchase it.

The book is not concerned with set plays, rules, etc. it focuses on improving player skills, and introduces basic team skills like the third man running drill. There are however no sections for goalkeeping drills.

If you interested in improving your players skill levels then I would recommend this book.
