Amazon.com Review
Whether you've been injured or want to avoid injury, the American Physical Therapy Association Book of Body Repair and Maintenance can help you. Part 1 is the first place to go if you've been hurt. It presents nine common injury sites--back, neck, jaw, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, and ankle and foot--describing the anatomy and function of that area of the body, what can go wrong, and what to do if you experience pain or injury there. Part 2 explains how to avoid injury through proper posture, gait, body mechanics (how we use our bodies in daily activities), body weight, and footwear. You also get a program of beginning strength training and stretching, plus tips for avoiding injuries in sports, exercise activities, and in the workplace. Part 3 presents 200 clearly illustrated exercises for strength (beginning level) and flexibility that can be done at home. Some require dumbbells or ankle weights; most need no equipment. Many are done seated or lying down, so even if you haven't fully recovered, you can start to rehabilitate those areas that are ready. The illustrations are line drawings, large enough so that you can learn the exercises easily with the book open on the floor. This book is practical and helpful--don't wait until you get hurt to read it. --Joan Price

Product Description
The new standard in fitness books, featuring hundreds of at-home stretches and exercises. At last, the first complete, fully illustrated compium of stretching and exercises for every part of the body, backed by the experience and medical and scientific authority of the American Physical Therapy Association. Each exercise in the book has been prepared and reviewed by a special editorial board, chaired by Dr. Marilyn Moffat, president emeritus of the APTA, and widely considered to be the preeminent expert in the field.

Broken down into three major sections, the book first offers illustrated descriptions of the structure and mechanics of each major body part, explaining what can go wrong and how to properly care for that area. A middle section provides general information on posture, body mechanics, weight control, aerobic conditioning, and maintenance programs. Each chapter references the main part of the book, the catalog of exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Fill in the Blanks in Your Exercise Program   September 18, 2008
I use books that specialize in certain areas (knees, backs, deep water aerobics, etc.) to build my exercise program. If you're thinking of using this book as a primary reference, read the other reviews.

I find this book to be an excellent supplement to fill in the blanks in my program. I was stabilizing my knees with Seated Knee Extensions with weights. As I increased the weight, muscles in the front of my hip started to hurt. I tried the Seated Hip Flexion in The Body Maintenance and Repair book and the pain disappeared.

After isometric exercises gave me enough strength to do partial curlups, I found my shoulder hurting because of the recommended arm positions in the books I was following. The Body Maintenance and Repair book showed that both curlups (crunches) and rotational curlups could be done with arms at your sides.

Part I tells how various joints of the body work. Part II covers many things you need to know in daily living. But for me the exercises in Part III are the heart of the the book.

In summary, by clearly illustrating and giving detailed directions for a wide variety of exercises, The Body Maintenance and Repair book has provided a very useful supplement for my exercise program.

5 out of 5 stars Body repair manual   January 17, 2008
This is a good basic book and a good place to start if you have any kind of musculoskeletal aches and pains. The book is organized by body part (for example, the ankle, the elbow) and tells you how the area works, what can go wrong with it, and how to take care of it. The book ends with lots of exercises for each body part, which are clearly illustrated. A great first place to start if you have any nagging problems you'd like to try and get rid of, I think most readers will find it very helpful. Also notable is their other book, Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource   December 30, 2007
After completing a successful course of manual physical therapy for my hip (piriformis)muscle, I got this book to help maintain my progress. I am thrilled with this book and find the exercise descriptions are clear and easy to understand, and the illustrations are helpful. This is an excellent resource not only for hip and back stretches, but for many other areas as well. Most of the stretches that my physical therapist taught me are described/illustrated in the book.

I like this book because it is recommended by Tufts University, so I know that I can trust the information.
