Product Description The streets of Stoneham, New Hampsire are lined with bookstores...and paved with murder.
When she moved to Stoneham, city slicker Tricia Miles met nothing but friendly faces. And when she opened her mystery bookstore, she met friendly competition. But when she finds Doris Gleason dead in her own cookbook store, killed by a carving knife, the atmosphere seems more cutthroat than cordial. Someone wanted to get their hands on the rare cookbook that Doris had recently purchased-and the locals think that someone is Tricia. To clear her name, Tricia will have to take a page out of one of her own mysteries-and hunt down someone who isn't killing by the book.

A good first effort July 25, 2008 This is a nice little page turner. I really like the book store slant (I think I may be a bookstore owner wannabe!), especially the fact the protagonist is the owner of a mystery book store. Not exactly in the same mold as Bernie Rodenbahr or Cliff Janeway, but Tricia Miles is a nice "cozy" sleuth in that sub-genre's tradition. You hate some characters and cheer for others in this book, always a good test - if something engages you emotionally, it's effective, as this story is. I am interested in buying the second book, if for no other reason, than to see if Tricia's ongoing-yet-undeclared war with the county sheriff continues. It'll be interesting to see how the other characters develop, as well.
A good cozy mystery July 13, 2008 Likes: Lorna Barrett paints a picture of a small, quiet, close-knit community. Also, I like the idea of the bookstores being the main tourist attraction of the small town. The story flowed nicely and I liked the 'twist' ending. It was a good start for the series.
Dislikes: Tricia (the main character) didn't have enough of a backbone. She just seemed to do whatever anyone told her and she never really spoke her mind. Also, Sheriff Wendy Adams never did her job, she was too intent on proving Tricia guilty of the murder.
Overall, I liked the book and will be picking up the next in the series.
Hooray for a new series June 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first book in a new series, and it is a promising beginning. Stoneham, NH, one of those typical New England towns whose center has died, figured a way out. Turning all of main street into bookstores, each with a specialty subject,(cookbooks, mysteries, history, etc.) and catering to tour busses, the town is pulling itself up by its bootstraps. Our protagonist owns the mystery book store, of course. She has a difficult sister who comes to town. These two play well off each other. Since I like the characters, I am sure I will keep reading the series. Unfortunately it will be 2009 before we see the next one.
Some of the reviewers found the flaws in the plotting. I suspect a bigger flaw might be that making much of a living with this kind of store is very hard. Fortunately our heroine lives over the store and only needs to support herself. The book is a good read.
Enjoyable book June 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this book. This is the 1st in this new series. I will read the next book in series when it is out.
Found this title most...... June 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
enjoyable and am looking forward to the next title in this series.
Having read most, but not all, of the previous reviews, I have to say that I do agree with some of the comments with regard to awkward phrasing, punctuation, etc. Add to that my own discomfort with Tricia's inner thoughts and feelings about her sister, and hoping that the author sees fit to alter what appears to me to be a "changing-for-the-better" relationship between the sisters, I still maintain my 5-star rating.
I loved the town and all the possibilities that exist for this series to grow on...especially Ms. Sheriff who must learn to control herself, as well as follow the law or leave it!! Loved Miss Marple tremendously, feel as though Angelica will grow in a positive way, as will Tricia, and as for her two employees, well, for me they just saved the day on all heartwarming levels.....
And for someone who donates her books, I loved the cover artwork enough to keep this one on my shelf...
Other recommendations: Julie Hyzy's State of the Onion, Mary Jane Maffini-check amazon.com for her series'; Deb Baker, Michele Martinez, David Rosenfelt, Lee Child, Harlan Coben. ENJOY
