Great True Crime Writing October 8, 2008

My true crime reading habit started years ago with classics such as In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, and Helter Selter, by Vincent Bugliosi. Much as I would like to quit the habit, books such as A Descent into Hell keep me turning the pages. I offest the subject matter with spiritual memoir reading and angel oracle decks.
Be forewarned, this case is graphic and horrible but Casey has a way of dealing with the bad stuff without sensationalizing.This story could be about anyone's family. The families of both victim and perpetrator (young adults in their 20's) are so mainstream, we recognize them immediately. Parents have talented kids who try out,but get lost in, the party/drugs/alcohol lifestyle. If not motivated to get back on track, awful things can happen. This is an important study in the psychology of being too caring (almost Stockholm syndrome)and of not following one's intuition. My heart goes out to the Cave family. When you lose a daughter, we lose a daughter.

I've read many, and I do mean many, true crime books. This one was by far the most disturbing. I couldn't put the book down. After finishing the book, I couldn't get it out of my mind.
The title of the book, "A Decent Into Hell" doesn't even begin to tell the story. Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a mother. But to have to live with the fact that your child was murdered and then mutilated and violated in the most vile way is beyond comprehension.
This book and it's revelations will take hold of you like no other. It all began when two people's lives, Jennifer and Colton, crossed paths. The decent into hell began at that moment.
I visit Austin, TX twice a year to visit family. Life goes on in Austin, TX and UT but after reading this book, I know I'll never be able to go back again without thinking of Jennifer and her family.

Move over Ann Rule, in fact don't just move over, get out of the way. Excellent account of not only a terrible crime, but the effect it had on all families involved, told in a sensitive and captivating manner. Holds your interest throughout, without sensationalizing the topic. Kathryn Casey is tops in her field!!

This is a great true crime book. It is the first book I've ever read where Im on the edge of my seat reading. Look out Ann Rule here is an author who is going to give you some competition!!!
This is a must read,even if you don't usually read this type of book you will really enjoy it.
True crime at its very best. If I could give it more stars I would give it 10 plus.
