Always entertaining April 1, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book years ago and still pick it up occasionally. Always entertaining. I had dreams, long since abandoned, of adventure on the high seas and this book always sparks them back up.
A Great Book November 6, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Vigor's book is an excellent place to start for anyone looking for a good, cheap world cruiser. It would take an adventurous spirit to cross oceans in any of these boats, particularly the two Cals mentioned, but one would not have to live a cruelly Spartan existence aboard them. The simplicity of traveling small eliminates the constant hassle of ice makers, generators and other expensive, power-hungry, time-consuming gear that will likely break down anyway. As I read, I found myself falling in love with whichever design Vigor was speaking of at the moment. I think there would be a real audience for another book, a book covering the small sailboats he doesn't mention here, the Bayfield 25 the Cheoy Lee, and others that one reviewer suggested. He could call it: Twenty MORE Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere. I'm sure Vigor could come up with more suggestions many haven't considered. Probably everyone who bought the first book would buy the second. I know I would as I plan an upgrade from my small Vagabond sloop. By the way, Vigor has a charming writing style which makes the book fun to read whether you're an experienced offshore sailor or just a dreamer.
Interesting Book to Read March 24, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you're looking for the right boat to sail around the world, this book is a good place to start. Well written and interesting to read. The only negative I have about the book is that the author is excessively biased towards older full keel sailboats. Newer sailboats can do as well as older full keel sailboats in many cases. All boats have their strengths and weaknesses so you just have to pick the one with the right mix for yourself.
A good placeto start, but... March 10, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
There should be more books like this for young sailors to read. His writing style is good - the information presented is good, but it is true he omitted some boats which should have been included. That said, how many people have sailed in every possible boat between 25 and 40 ft that might be capable off shore? I like the emphasis on inexpensive boats. In addition to this book be sure to read J. Fitzgerald's "Sea-Steading" , Pardey's books, and Hiscocks. You don't need an expensive boat full of all the latest gadgets to sail the oceans!
Great Information but Needing a 2nd Edition September 7, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
The edition of the book that I have was published in 1999. It was a very helpful book to guide me in my selection of my first sailboat. The general principles that John Vigor advocates will be valid indefinately. I found his "In Comparison" ratings and his "Known Weaknesses" sections valuable. His ratings of comparative seaworthiness, speed, and comfort help anyone selecting a small cruising sailboat. John has made a great contribution with this book. That being said, it would be nice to get a new edition. In particular, it would be valuable to get John's views on other potential bluewater sailboats easily cruised and handled by two people. What are his views on other boats in 28' to 32' size? I suggest the 1999 upper price limit of $50K should be increased. How about a limit of $100K? John's opinions on selected other potential boats from Beneteau, C&C, Catalina, Ericson, Island Packet, and Tartan would make it worth while to buy a new edition.
