Highly Recommended February 7, 2007 A truly moving and inspirational story. In less capable hands autobiographies like this can come off as sappy or insincere - not this one.
Clearly, you'd be laid low by the devastating realization that you're going to be confined to a wheel chair for the rest of your life, but not as low as getting dumped by your long-time girlfriend after the accident. Mark's not afraid to bear his soul which makes for a really empathetic character and a really engaging book.
Thank You January 7, 2007 A++!! I never read, in fact i've made it through college not reading more than 500 pages. Even given that I read this book cover to cover in 5 days. This book is an inspirational story about not giving up and being yourself. Once you start you cant put it down. The story couldnt be better if it was fiction. The truth is that i was recently paralyzed and looking for something to help cope. After seeing the movie "murderball", my girlfriend bought me this book. I cant thank her enough. Paralyzed or not, this book is great.
Amazing Read!!! January 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just finished this book and was completely blown away from page one to the end. I am utterly speechless. I was very intrigued with quad rugby after seeing MURDERBALL and when I saw Mark Zupan's book in an airport, I knew I had to read this. His brutal honesty and ability to grasp life and hardship by the huevos is clearly demonstrated in his telling of how his entire life changed -- in many ways, as he describes, for the better -- following his accident. His tale is one that everyone should read!! A very highly recommended and fast book to read! If I ever have the chance to meet this guy, I'll definitely have to by a round (I just hope that I can keep up with him).
Politically Incorrect, Unflinching, Funny & Inspiring as Hell!! January 4, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mark Zupan is a living illustration of the adage, "When life hands you a lemon - make lemonade." His lemon was being ejected from the bed of a friend's pickup truck, into which he had fallen asleep in a drunken stupor. Inch by inch, Zupan rebuilds his life - not the life he once had, but an active and rich life nonetheless.
His attitude is in your face and the book has some hilarious passages due to Zupan's "earthy" humor. A redemptive story of friendship, love, meaning through sports competition, true grit and a refusal to wallow in self-pity.
Read the book and then treat yourself to a viewing of "Murderball" while you're at it ...
True, tough biography December 5, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As someone the same age as Mr. Zupan with a daughter in a wheelchair I was able to get motivation about her life, as well as my own from this book. This book will help anyone whose life took an unexpected turn. I recommend it or reference a story from it almost daily and I finished it a month ago.
