when I wrote my 1 star review called "Worst Damn Sports Book Ever", did you not realize that this was a play on the TV show called "Best Damn Sports Show"?

5 out of 5 stars Johnny U   November 4, 2007
Great book. Tom Callahan really did his research in writing this book. The many interviews of former players, coaches, friends, and family of Unitas reveals his true personality. Also, the games and players of that era were described in great detail. all current players in the NFL should be required to read this book to understand their roots.

3 out of 5 stars Typical sports biography   October 28, 2007

Hearing the praise for Tom Callahan's biography "Johnny U" on sports talk radio prodded me into reading a genre that I usually do not fancy. What I encountered was a rather ordinary recounting of primarily the professional life of a legendary man still considered to be by many the greatest quarterback and leader in the history of football.

What becomes clear is that Unitas was a very private person and very little substantiative information about him as a person rather than a sports icon comes to light.

Callahan give us understanding of Unitas the athlete by documenting his poor hardscrabble blue collar upbringing in Western Pennsylvania, the birthplace of many stellar professional athletes. Unitas born into a hard working Lithuanian family, was primarily raised by his stern but beloved mother, his father passsing when he was five. Showing athletic prowess with undeniable leadership qualities, hours upon hours of practice enabled him to gain admittance to unheralded Louisville University on a football scholarship. Dogged determination enabled him to ultimately make his mark in the fledgling NFL, first with the Steelers and then with the Colts.

While the book did not delve deeply into Unitas' private life it was filled with stories and anecdotes from teammates and opponents which wove countless tales from the halcyon days of pro football. Special emphasis was placed on the 1958 NFL championship game between the Colts and the Giants. The overtime thriller was the first televised championship football game and propelled Unitas into a mythical status befitting a player with his impeccable skills.

While his life after football was not as glorious as his professional career, Unitas proved to be a concerned and dedicated father and husband and a man who carried himself with decorum and class.

5 out of 5 stars the best ever   October 25, 2007
in my opinion, there are only three players or maybe 4 in football history that changed the game and made the game for what it is today.they didnt not know fear, never asked for anything more except to play the game the way it should be played.never complained when they got hurt, never embarresed another teammate and never failed to rise to the occasion! if were going into battle you would want someone like general patton or general curtis lemay leading you.there were other quaterbacks who threw for more yrds, more tds more completions, etc.in a time that was much tougher to play quaterback, and when you called your own plays!!!!,roughing the passer,[was there such a thing?].no no but no one played the position of quaterback than johnny unitas!! all quaterbacks are compared to unitas, but unitas was compared to no one!!!!! johnny u.the best ever!!!!!!!!!!
