Excellent instruction book March 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have struggled with my short game for years. This book is easy to follow and provides a reliable, simple method for chips, pitches and bunker shots. At first it seems different, but once you give it a try it feels right, and it also flows from the long game. Buy this book.
The best book on the short game January 21, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have been playing for years, and I know that my short game is an area that I need to improve. I have read several different books on the short game and this one is easily the best.
Stan explains his principles in a clear format. The photos are instructive and illustrate his ideas. He changed my style and, although it took some time to get used to it, I can see the improvement.
Excellent Book January 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I ordered this book as I had enjoyed his first book on putting. My putting has improved and so has my short game. I suffered from inconsitencies due to as Stan puts it "my lower body was encased in concrete". His methods buck conventionaly wisdom but not common sense and my practice and play thus far has shown considerable improvement.
The information is all there, although in my case I had to read, practice and then re-read to absorb it all. I wish he would have but bullets at the end of each chapter. I disagree with the one poor review. I think he put the Chip & Pitch shot photo's next to each other in the Chipping chapter so that you could easily see the differences.
The only thing I'm not totally sold on is playing fairway shots with a wedge with alot of bounce.

Utley is an utterly inspired teacher! December 30, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Stan Utley has managed to share the brilliance of his short game talents with the rest of us who don't have 20 years to fine tune short game skills, and break down his methodology to clearly and simply relate a very reproducible swing which provides very reproducible results within a short tap in of most flags. I was a 16 handicap prior to reading his book and expect my scores to plummet rapidly given the new skills he so easily communicates. Utilizing a chipping technique that can be learned in minutes to obtain great results makes his approach accessible to everyone. The secret of reproducibility is his utilization of the large muscles with a small pivot and club on plane following the target line through impact. This is so radically different from what is usually taught, but so intuitively correct! I'm also a fan of his putting instructional book as well.
The Art of the Short Game December 25, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Stan Utley describes his unique ideas for short game pitching and chipping. His approach uses a mini-swing and the bounce of your sand or lob wedges to get it close to the hole. I've been trying it for about a month; the techniques work, but do take some time to learn well enough to carry it to the course.
