5 out of 5 stars My 2-year-old's favorite book!   November 3, 2008
This quickly became my 2-year-old's absolute favorite book. I am considering buying a second copy so that he doesn't need supervised reading of our only copy. He was a little confused at first (called the angled "L" a "V" and the V to W is a bit confusing for him) but keeps asking for it again and again. He recognizes almost all of the letters now thanks to his magnetic letters that he loves and now this book.

We pre-ordered this one and have had it since its release. It is still in perfect condition and I try to use the book as a lesson in being gentle with more delicate books. So far we have had success.

2 out of 5 stars unimaginative, even if the intended audience is younger children   October 30, 2008

I got this book because I study dimensional typography. I wasn't expecting it to be a revelation, but thought it might be a "fun" book to have. After the first couple of pop-ups, I found the sense of wonder to trickle off pretty quickly, as there are not really that many surprises. The pop up techniques seem pretty reptitious...and I wonder if it could offer any sustained interest even for young children.

The bottom line: pretty unimaginative as a children's book, not substantive enough for adults.

5 out of 5 stars Just your type   October 25, 2008

One for the designers I fancy. A delightful pop-up A to Z in a minimalist format that creative folk will love. Almost every letter has a three-dimensional aspect, the exceptions are O,P,Q and R which use a transparent page to turn the letters from one to another. V creates a W using a whole page of mirror foil. Everything else pops up or slides left to right with the letter S having two circles that revolve as the spread is opened.

The look and feel of the book is that it is aimed at grownups. The type is loosely based on Futura presented in black, red and white on black and white spreads. The paper construction is not particularly complex but the overall effect is very creative: like using a common dot for an i and j or a C being flipped over into a D.

I don't see ABC3D in the same context as a kids pop-up book and it's in the completely opposite direction from the stunning creations by Robert Sabuda (and if you are new to pop-ups check Sabuda's extraordinary Winter's Tale: An Original Pop-up Journey) but as an adult pop-up keepsake it has a lot going for it. Incidentally I'm surprised that there is nothing about Marion Bataille anywhere in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Okay as a reference of pop-up techniques, however...   October 24, 2008

The main quibble I have with this book is the lenticular cover. Not only is the direction of the lenticular film completely wrong (it's 90 degrees off), the design demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how that technology works. It ruins what should have been a great asset to the book - imagine if the title appeared in 3D.

5 out of 5 stars There are no errors and it is complete   October 23, 2008

The title is misleading, as it implies that the number three is included. It is not.

A careful inspection of the book shows that all 26 letters are included here (including the often overlooked 'Q'). In addition, they appear to be in the proper order, including LMNO.

For anyone needing a complete directory of the alphabet, with the added benefit of learning the order, this book is highly recommended.
