5 out of 5 stars Child-Directed Cooking   June 30, 2006
7 out of 7 found this review helpful

From age 4 to age 7, my daughter has greatly enjoyed cooking from this book. Unlike when we cook together from other cookbooks or recipes, when we cook from this book, she can really take the lead, and I am her assistant. At age 7, she is able to make some of the items entirely on her own. Using this book has encouraged her to take an active role in preparing foods for our family and dinner guests. She takes pleasure and pride in her creations, because she worked hard and they taste good! Because of the thoughtful design of the book, the child doesn't have to be able to read to figure out what to do, with a little parental help. The recipes included are healthful and tasty. The drawings and layout are appealing to children and adults. I highly recommend this book to families with children from preschool through at least second grade to get your children into the fun of cooking. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good idea, but format could be improved   April 10, 2006

My kids and I tried this cookbook from the library. While we really enjoyed making a few of the recipes out of this book (esp. the popovers) I have to agree with another reviewer that the format makes it someone difficult to use-esp. on the spur of the moment. The adult really needs to have time to have thoroughly read the recipe and gathered all the ingredients before the kids join you in the kitchen. Then you can flip to the illustrated instructions for the kids. This is a good idea but not always practical. It would of been nice to have the two meshed so that the kids could "read" the illustrations, while you read the directions. I also found the recipes limited in scope and difficulty, but it is great for cooking with preschool age children.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Fun in the Kitchen with Kids   February 20, 2006
This cookbook is fun for toddlers to read. The pictures are easy to follow and the recipes are good too. Veggetable still are a challenge to get our toddler to eat but cooking/designing the veggi plate is great!

2 out of 5 stars Disapointed!   February 20, 2006

My kids (okay, my husband) purchased me a junior cookbook for Mother's Day last year. My 3-year-old and I have enjoyed several recipes out of that book. I decided to try and find another book that we would enjoy as well. After reading the online reviews for this book, I made the purchase. However, when it arrived, I was disapointed to find a lot of recipes that wouldn't fit my family's tastes. I thought the illustrations for the recipes was a clever idea, but didn't like the idea of flipping back and forth from the drawings to the detailed instructions. I'm returing this book and will again begin my quest to find a cookbook that my kids and I can enjoy together.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook for Children!   June 7, 2005

What a clever book this is- the recipes are illustrated so that your child (with supervision of course) can cook. The recipes are very easy to follow and use simple ingredients. Adults do have to do some preparation, but most of the actual measuring and mixing can be done by the child. Even better- the recipes are for things that your child is probably already fond of eating. This book would be a great addition to a preschool or kindergarten teacher's library- there are several recipes that would be appropriate for preparing at school. Overall, a great little book to get children active in the kitchen.
