4 out of 5 stars Solid show   October 16, 2006
This is a nice set from the band's "cowfunk" period, exhibiting the sound--then in its embryonic stage of development--that would characterize Phish for many years to come. This particular take of "Tweezer" is a fine example of the band's newfound less-is-more philosophy of improvisation. "Tweezer" is followed by an inspired, albeit somewhat conventional, version of "Reba." "Ghost" is clearly the show's centerpiece, lasting for over 20 minutes and showcasing the band's telepathic interplay. The band also soars on numbers like "Down with Disease" and "You Enjoy Myself." This release does contain some flaws, however, such as the blues jams in the middle of disc 2. Furthermore, disc 3 contains an utterly self-indulgent reading of Wolfman's Brother (check out Slip Stich and Pass for a more focused version), which ebbs and flows through many themes, none of which are very compelling, and quickly becomes a tedious listen. Overall, though, the show's stronger moments more than compensate for these slip-ups.

4 out of 5 stars Each disc gets better   May 20, 2006

I'm not a Phish head - I never saw them live and I only own 4 or 5 live shows. I do like them though. I have to say, this show, while great, is not my favorite of the ones I own. The first disc is not even that good, in fact. But the second disc is better--roughly on par with some of my favorite stuff. And the third disc; holy crap! It is by far the best single disc of live Phish I own! YEM is absolutely incredible. The boys go into a 5 minute vocals-only excursion, but it's not the usual barbershop quartet exercise, it's even weirder than that. It's basically four white guys softly *beatboxing* over each other. It's amazing, and you have to hear it for yourself, period. The third disc is also rounded out by a nice "Character Zero," an average "Wolfman's Brother" (average Wolfman's Brother = great song), and a terrific, uberfunky "Makisupa Policeman."

I only rate it 4 stars because I'm averaging all three discs. But you still need to get this--it's well worth the price for the third disc alone! Then the second disc being good just seems like an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Phish's Best   February 28, 2005

This was the first Phish Cd (show) I ever bought or heard. I've been hooked on the band ever since. I've been to see Phish and heard 100's of their shows. I still think that this show is one of their best. I don't like to give Five Star ratings, but here you go!

5 out of 5 stars My Dear Lord   September 16, 2004

Aight, there's no possible way this album deserves anything less than 5 stars. Its absolutley mind blowing from start to finish. The level of cohesion that the band achieves at this show is unparalleled. Tweezer, Ghost, YEM....i mean jesus, you have to hear it to believe it. The band talks about this show as a "breakout performance" and upon listening, it becomes very clear just how much they truly busted out at this show. GET IT. NOW.
