Interesting, but Difficult read November 1, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Mr. Dawkins is obviously an intelligent man and cites more references than I ever cared to read in one work, but I give him credit. He is extremely convincing of his arguments, almost to the point of being condescending to anyone who doesnt think like his definition of an athiest. His verbage is a bit like studying for the SAT again. Is it really necessary to write that way to get your point across? I know what those words mean, but if he was so convicted in his ideology, then he would have made it easier for people to understand as opposed to showing everyone how smart he is. I also thought his "victimization" of athiests as social outcasts was interesting, and perhaps in some circles, true, but I think it was a bit of a weak point. His complete rational destruction of religiong as an institution, is absolutely beautiful. However, his points to disprove Gods existence are only as provable as the controls and variables of any experiment. It has been proven time and time again, that the impossible has been proven possible, so I think Mr. Dawkins should not judge the impossible so harshly.
Everyone should read this October 31, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Everyone should read this book. If it does its job, and if you're rational, it'll convince you that there is no god. This is the book that started new atheism. Please stand up and be counted. We can do it!
A Wonderful Book.. October 31, 2008 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
Whether you are an atheist or a believer, this book is a genuinely life-changing work. I have always been an atheist, but occasionally find myself thinking that it would be nice if God existed - idle day-dreaming, really. This book shows that nature without God is many times more awe-inspiring and fascinating, simply because the facts themselves show it to be.
And I'm glad Dawkins had the courage to point out the link between intelligence and atheism. I have to agree, as so many of those who hold strong beliefs in God tend to be illiterate and - dare I say it? - belligerent.
Well Written but Drops the Ball in the Logic Department October 30, 2008 2 out of 15 found this review helpful
Dawkins is clearly a gifted writer, but the topic he tackles is at times over his head.
For example, he does an extremely poor job dealing with the problem of irreducibly complex survival features in organisms.
In his discussion on this subject he repeatedly points to the dichotomy of chance vs. natural selection, seemingly never realizing that irreducibly complex features present just as much (or more, really) of a difficulty for theories espousing the latter.
Contrary to his assertion, if something is irreducibly complex it could NOT have simply aggegrated by small degrees over time. There would be no selection for the component parts because only the whole is relevant to the organism's survival. In this case, chance is actually a BETTER explanation than natural selection, for the latter is not an explanation at all nor even internally coherent.
Anyway the book is clever, funny, and enjoyable. Not terribly scientific, but it's a tough subject, obviously.
Great Overview of Anti-Theistic Realism October 30, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I believe in 'God' and still found this book to be an honest, rational and informative look at some glaring incongruities about Faith and Religion. Richard Dawkins has written a thoughtful, clear and brave treatise on irrational belief in God in the world today. Also check out books by Sam Harris and Christopher Huitchins for further musings on this subject. I believe, along with the afore-mentioned authors, that too much religion is indeed harmful to our societies and to our psyche, and that these books are not dangerous to men and women of faith, but rather challenging and liberating. Perhaps we need books like these even more than the atheists/rationalists do.
