4 out of 5 stars Perfect bathroom book   July 23, 2006

Condensed Knowledge edited by Will Pearson definitely overloaded my brain. I don't think that this is a book meant to be read over the course of just a few sittings (or in my case, one day). There is so much info packed in here, I don't know how much I really retained, but there's superficial information about physics, biology, pop culture, music, and many other topics. The reader learns about the main movers and shakers in each subject as well as the info you need to know to sound informed about just about anything. I was a little disappointed in the writers' occasional liberal bent, especially about religion. While talking about Christianity, they can be a little flippant, and the gnostic gospels are discussed as part of the Scriptures. However, overall this is the perfect bathroom book. When you only have a few minutes to grab something to read, pick this up and learn a little something about the world.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Whoever Said It Was "The Answer Book" Anyway?!   May 6, 2006

My comments on this book are complimentary in total. Take it for what it is. It has a SOUP CAN on the cover for goodness sake! Reading the reviews for this book has been far LESS cerebral than this little book. Get a life and get over yourself to a great many of the reviewers. Apparently you already know it all so why did you bother to read it anyhow? By the way, as a side note, you never know everything. No matter who you are. As for the book: It is like taking the comedy version of defensive driving. Some things can't be side-splitting knee-slapping hilarious but can be made witty and entertaining while sneaking in a little education. Makes it ultimately an educating entertainment experience. That's it folks! This book really is a great read. No, it will not illuminate you with the answers that have illuded humankind since the dawn of time. No brilliantly mastered lifetime of work promising to create a new race of geniuses from inferior beings. I personally didn't feel as if the author was inferring any reader an idiot at the same time proclaiming himself the keeper of all knowledge. It would have said something to that effect on that Soup Can Label cover, right? I loved it and hope to read more like it. Being that I am out of college and have some time on my hands.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Trivia Book   December 9, 2005

Learned of this book from an ad in the A Word A Day e-mails and thought it looked interesting for the price. This book contains assorted lists (for example, '5 Scandals That Rocked Art') classified into 15 major subjects ('Art History' to 'Religion'). Each entry in a list is followed by a paragraph; the lists average 2 pages each.
The book is fun but not as funny as the authors seem to think. A few lists are horribly trite (e.g. '3 Rock Gods Who Died At 27') and some are mere opinion ('7 Classic TV Episodes That Should Be Sent into Space to Demonstrate to Aliens What We Earthlings Call 'Funny'').
The 'Fake Your Way Through A Conversation' sidebars are witty and the page layout is attractive. Considered subscribing to the magazine but have not done so yet. My copy came with a 50%-off subscription offer.

I have not read the book myself--I sent it straight to my wife who is deployed in Central Asia with the military. But, she just loves it. She tore through it and found it a great, fun read.
