Easy to learn Spanish March 8, 2006 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I found this to be just what I needed, after struggling with a few other types. It moves you along, helps you in the pronunciation and makes it easy to learn.I downloaded the mp3 version from audiobooks at half the price seen here and use it on my portable player, thats the way to go.
a bit pricey you say? February 1, 2006 27 out of 30 found this review helpful
Other reviewers have already adequately listed the reasons for using the Pimsleur method. I did all three levels of Italian and have a excellent proficiency in the language (especially pronunciation).
However, the price for these CDs is a bit high in my opinion. Pimsleur could actually make more $ by lowering the price because many more people would then buy it. I think it's an exorbitant price and a ridiculous burden on a poor little consumer who's trying to become bilingual. Anyway.
Definitely use Pimsleur, it is great! -- my only suggestion is that you check your local library before forking out the cash. I live in a pretty big city and was able through circulation request to obtain all 3 levels on CD. I then burned all 27 or so discs onto my computer into mp3s and listened to them on a portable device. Thus learning Italiano for free ;)
If you're computer proficient and really cheap like me also try a file-sharing network like Limewire - many people share Pimsleur language audio tracks (or the whole program as one file) just like music. Just a suggestion...
Best way to start. December 16, 2005 6 out of 18 found this review helpful
Pimsleur method worked for me. If it works use it. No complaints. Remember this is only a starting point not a be all, end all course.
Probably one of the key ingredients to learning Spanish December 12, 2005 36 out of 38 found this review helpful
Pimsleur is heavily hyped for a good reason - it works. My own "formula" for learning spanish in middle age includes three approaches: 1) Pimsleur CDs; 2) Grammar study; and 3) Practice with native spanish speakers (or whatever form of "immersion" you can get). Pimsleur works because of the challenge to your memory, using a technique called graduated recall. If you have a way to play them while commuting, your trip will pass like a flash.
My own method of learning pushes me to know the grammar behind what I am hearing, so I purchased Barron's Spanish the Easy Way. I also have several other grammar texts which I purchased on Amazon after checking reviews. One gadget I highly, highly recommend is an electronic Spanish dictionary, which has become indispensable. Once you use on of those, you will rarely use a hardcover version. I carry this with me in my pocket and find myself looking up words all of the time. You can find one of these by Googling it.
Go with Pimsleur, absolutely, but shop around. Make sure you can't do better than the price listed here.
Pimsleur Spanish I October 25, 2005 26 out of 28 found this review helpful
Wonderful learning tool!! I studied Spanish in High School over 20 years ago and forgot most of what I learned. With the Pimsleur tapes I have been able to speak phrases with one of my friends from Spain after only a few lessons. The lessons are fun and practical and I look forward to each day starting a new lesson. I am a technical trainer by profession and I know from experience that learning has to be fun and engaging in order to keep the student coming back for more. The Pimsleur tapes accomplish this goal completely.
More importantly, I am finding that the Pimsleur tapes have such practical lessons, (teaching everyday conversation), that I am actually thinking in Spanish as well.
I ordered some audio tapes from another company and was very disappointed at the poor documentation (spelling errors) and pronunciation in the other tapes. The other company promoted that they used real spanish (Latino) speakers in their audio tapes but those Latino speakers have poor English pronunciation so I found myself getting lost trying to understand what they are saying in English before I can begin to learn the Spanish words.
The Pimsleur tapes have speakers that speak with excellent English AND Spanish pronunciation. The way the audio lessons should be created!
These tapes are definitely some of the best educational tools I have ever encountered. I am looking forward to the delivery of my Spanish II tapes and many more tapes after that from Pimsluer!
