View your game from a new perspective. April 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I ordered this book because of the reviews, fully expecting to be disappointed. Wrong!
Tommy Angelo manages in 250 well-written and exceptionally well-edited pages to cover many aspects of poker that you'll seldom see discussed. The book would be worth reading even if it contained nothing new simply because it's readable, even entertaining.
But it does contain much that is new to poker literature, if not in substance in slant. For example his discussion of "A-Game, B-Game, and C_Game" hands should be an eye opener for players who habitually play cards that are certain losers. In his classification there is only one B-Game hand - and I'll not step on his punch line by telling what it is. Heeding his advice on this topic should help to make more decisions black vs. white rather than an endless variety of shades of gray.
Players enamored with suited cards would be well advised to read element 32 (Suitedness and Connectedness) where they'll get a realistic view of the true value of suited cards. (Being suited adds about 4% probability of winning to a hand at a full table, 2% heads up.) Eveyone understands that position is of paramount importance in Hold'em. So there's nothing new to be said about it, right? Wrong. Angelo's discussion of elements 28-31 reveals nothing "new", but does reveal what we all think we know in a new light. Read his discussion then re-read Sklansky.
The bottom line is you'll gain a few insights into the old familiar topics. More importantly, you will gain some entirely new perspectives on your game and some of what you already know will be seen so clearly you'll realize that although you could quote the concept you didn't really know it. Angelo's prose is so readable and his ideas so well expressed that you'll find yourself rethinking your own game as you progress through the book. I can't imagine any player not learning something valuable from this book.
Did I mention that it's readable? Looks like an actual English-language editor checked for spelling, syntax, etc. This may be the most readable poker book I've seen.
Greatest Poker book EVER for Experienced Players April 10, 2008 First of all, you should be familiar with the rules and how to play an A game. Preferably, you should already be a winning player before reading this book.
Tommy will transform your thinking outside the game and give you exactly what you need to win more. The best poker book ever for the experienced player.
P.S. The writing is very entertaining and fun to read.
Take A Breath.... April 7, 2008 This book is for everyone at any level beyond never having played the game. It will help you deal with that inner voice and constant mental chatter about your decisions on the felt. I can't wait to read it again.
i liked it. March 25, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
wish it was longer. wish it contained some poker strategy in order to create a winning "A game". as fun as it was to read, i also wish i could say it actually improved my hold'em game. but i don't think it did. a lot of good tips... that's pretty much the whole book.
i think the breathing in and hi-jack position stuff was great, but a little of it felt like padding. for a coaching book, i guess i expected a little more coaching than advice such as "play bad less often". if Elements of Poker was only the first half and the second half was filled with detailed hand by hand analysis, then it would have probably been worthy of five stars. as it is, three.
also, most of the key points in his book can be found for free on Tommy's website.

How many times can you reread a book? March 20, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been over the text of Elements of Poker at least a dozen times, and I enjoyed it every time.
I had a head start -- I served Tommy as his lead editor. I count contributing to this book as one of my proudest accomplishments. Tommy is a great writer. He brings fresh perspectives, a sense of humor, and years of conscious experience to writing about poker. He also brings genuine concern for his readers. His desire to spare his readers pain shows on every page.
Elements of Poker is particularly strong in helping poker players win the emotional game of poker. Topics like tilt and quitting immediately improve results. Much of the book applies very profitably to life as well as poker. And it's all written entertainingly.
I find quotes from Elements of Poker returning to my mind, and I'm glad they do. It's my very good fortune to have Tommy's words as familiar as nursery rhymes to me now.
