4 out of 5 stars The Therapy of Buddhism   June 9, 2008
11 out of 13 found this review helpful

The book is a fun, breeze description of a "new" self-help therapy technique called ACT.

In this version it is presented mostly as a therapy techinque for healthy people to live happier life's. What is really cool is that the technique is really Insight Meditation. Without using any Buddhist language the author describes how to experience our life in a state of awareness and acceptance; to be with our thoughts, feelings and emotions without judgment or struggle. For those of you who would like to explore the therapy benefits that Buddhism has to offer this would be a great book to read.

The author draws from concepts of modern psychology, neuron-psychology and evolutionary psychology all to basically underpin what the Buddha talked about 2,500 years ago.

If you enjoy Buddhist thought this book will help bring home the "therapeutic" benefits of Buddhism. If you could care less about Buddhism this book will still provide plenty practical advise to live with more awareness and ease. Either way you stand to gain something.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best self-help book for everyone   June 7, 2008

I recommend this book to all my clients and colleagues. In a very accessible and captivating way, Dr Russ Harris made us understand how our mind can sometimes be an enemy to living a rich, vital and meaningful life. The book is full of EFFECTIVE, evidence-based strategies to effectively respond to our distressing emotions, thus reducing their impact on us. It also gives us strategies to disentangle ourselves from self-defeating thoughts. As we are able to free ourselves from the impact of unhelpful thoughts and feelings, we stop figthing them, and can invest our energy in living our life. As I read the book, I realize that life is not about having happy, pleasant thoughts and feelings. It is about living a meaningful life consistent with our values. The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy gives us the needed tools to just do that: FREE ourselves from our MIND and have the energy to live a meaningful life.
The Happiness Trappy is the most accessible, easiest to understand book on ACT therapy. It is the first book I recommend you to read on ACT. And if you become passionate about ACT like me, you can continue with many other fantastic and helpful books on ACT by other authors.

5 out of 5 stars A must read book on ACT   June 7, 2008

A beautifully written, clear, and concise ACT book. "The Happiness Trap" is not only useful as a self-help book, but it is also a fantastic book for clinicians who want an easy to read, complete summary of ACT. Russ manages to captivate his audience so that you really must keep reading until the end!

4 out of 5 stars Easy access to ACT   June 7, 2008
The Happiness Trap is an easy to read self-help book on ACT, that will help the reader with easy to do exercises that can make a difference. Using examples from his own life Russ Harris makes it very clear that all of us are members of the human race, that will, one way or the other encounter difficulties and suffering. This book can help you reduce suffering and vitalize your life.

5 out of 5 stars Happiness Trap Enlightening   June 6, 2008
I recently purchased this book after attending a workshop and chatting with Dr. Harris. While I'm not too far into the book, I am already enjoying it. The web links supporting his book offer some great forms for use with the book, too! I'm certain this book will be both accessible and very useful for others as well.

Cheers!
