Something lacking July 21, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was very excited for this book, I was really seeking out an all-encompasing book on the topic for my loved ones. After reading this book, not one of my loved ones will ever see this book, unless of course they seek it out and purchase it themselves. I think this book casts people with Bipolar in a very negative light. Instead of being useful and instilling hope, I found it to be depressing and very limiting. I feel you should give your loved ones a really good idea of what it means to be bipolar, but it should be cast in a positive light, not a negative one.
Superb Book July 20, 2007 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Everyone in a relationship with someone who suffers from bipolar disorder will benefit from reading this book. Period.
Going a long way to understanding bipolar July 15, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found this book an extremely useful tool/insight into the world of bipolar. The practical tips given can go along way into eliminating some of the chaos that bipolar can create within the sufferer and those who love them. While nothing is a cure all, these helpful hints can create dialogue between the people involved and a deeper understanding. It is written in a gentle and constructive way for carers who may find it difficult to crawl into the mind of the person they love and understand that certain behaviours are not coming from a rational space. As it is often hard to know what practical things to do with an irrational disorder "Loving Someone With Bipolare Disorder" is an excellent place to start and gives hope for brighter more in control future. The book is useful also for the bipolar sufferer to understand what the disorder can do to those they love and the importance of taking their "triggers", "symptoms" and "what works" for them seriously. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to anyone needing to understand bipolar better.
Great for People Living With Bipolar Too! June 9, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
If my husband could know intimately what I have been through, the things that led me to where I am, everything I now struggle with, my perceptions of the world, my feelings about myself, and my experience of life - all I would have to do is give him this book. Which I did and it is amazing! I even learned a lot about managing the illness and my stress triggers. There is a really great focus on being partners in this together, because when someone loves you, the illness becomes "our" illness, not just affecting you alone any more. But also it focuses on the partner's needs as well, which I love beacuse I want my husband to trust I will be OK so he can go out and do what he wants. If I had written down exactly what I need when in an episode and how he can help me while still living his own life, I'd have written a lot of this book. I learned more from it than any other book on bipolar disorder just for myself. I felt normal, like a person with worth in a relationship again. It can be so hard to see that I am not a diagnosis, but a person with a lot to offer - people just have to understand how I offer it! Different does not mean bad. It gave me hope about the power of love - the love within my marriage, but also maintaining love for myself.
This book saved our relationship! June 1, 2007 My bf is bipolar and after reading this book I understand a lot more about his condition now. It also gave me some tips on how to deal with his mood swings. Overall, very helpful!
