4 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for this book-   January 11, 2007

I have been looking for a support group in my area for years and cannot find one. This book has taken the place of a group. Very informative about Bipolar and the mental and physical issues surrounding it. My husband has had Bipolar/Resistant Depression for 20+ years and this book taught me more than any counselor ever has. The book concentrates on the spouse who needs support but encourages the spouses to try to change/help the ill partner. I found that frustrating, as I know the healthy person cannot really change the ill person. We can only stand by, love, and keep the family functioning. Overall, this book has been a gift to me and I recomend it to any family member suffering with a very depressed/Bipolar individual.

This is a great book. I'm friends with someone who is Bi-polar and it brought a lot of insight about her disorder.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful in identifying coping tips   August 7, 2006

As an individual with bipolar, I would like others to understand me and help me stop myself when I am beginning to act inappropriately.
This book identifies many tips that can help outsiders understand the disease and help them help the person that they love.
I've asked my husband to read it.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book 25 years ago!   August 1, 2006

"Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder" is a book that shares real solutions to a real problem. BiPolar Disorder has been very prevelant in my immediate family for the past 25 years. I have learned to cope with the disorder in family members in my own way but I needed to do more than cope. "Loving Someone With biPolar Disorder" has opened my eyes to several things. 1. How to separate the illness from the person. 2. Through the writing exercises I am learning how much I personally have been affected by loving someone(s) with Bipolar Disorder. 3. If you want to know how you can support your loved one who has this illness, this book can give that to you. This is definitely a hands on approach and if possible you can work together. 4. A holistic approach to treating this illness. Man does not live by medicine alone. 5.It is possible to head off the worst case scenarios by knowing the warning signs and using preventative treatments before things get out of hand.

This is just a sampling of what I have discovered by reading "Loving Someone With BiPolar Disorder". It is not a cure all and it takes hard work on our part but my family has already started to benefit. I love this book and am highly recommending it to others.

4 out of 5 stars Great information for those who are really motivated to help their spouse   July 15, 2006

In my case the book came too late. I had pretty much made up my mind to get out of the relationship mainly due to my inability to forgive the horrible things that happened while my husband was manic. The hints in the book are helpful to those who have just learned the diagnosis of their spouse or who are very forgiving. However, the descriptions are not sometimes detailed enough (e.g. re: first signs of each bipolar state are only given for one state).
