Loving Someone November 27, 2005 24 out of 33 found this review helpful
I was hoping for something different, I suppose. Magical thinking on my part. It seems like my husband's bipolar disorder holds me hostage with the mood swings and verbal abuse and now I am supposed to keep charts and diaries and ask him questions. Our lives revolve around what kind of mood he is in and after 14 years of it I feel ready to bail out. It just seems like the author expects the partner to be saint-like and totally wrapped up in their spouse's disorder. This might help a couple that is just at the beginning and if the person with the Bipolar disorder is willing to take meds and be involved with their treatment. Good luck.
Thank you Julie A Fast for this Book!!!! November 21, 2005 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
"Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder" is an excellent book for anyone who loves someone with Bipolar Disorder. So many books help you understand what Bipolar Disorder is, but few give you great techniques for helping your loved one and having goals to make life better.
This book teaches you to see the patterns and triggers of bipolar disorder in your own situation and helps you make goals to make these more manageable and helpful to you and your loved one.
Thank you so much for this excellent and helpful guide.

I bought this book for my husband in the hope it would help him understand more about my bipolar. He seemed to struggle with what I tried to tell him sometimes, and mostly I felt too ashamed or embarassed to tell him how i felt and this book has made such a difference to that! He has been able to go to it when he needs to find something out - when i am not able (or maybe not willing) to let him in. He has little bookmarks all through it! The book explains things in a way that makes it easy to use (my husband isn't big on reading), and it has exercises that can be done to help clarify matters - although he/we haven't gotten past the digesting of extra infomation stage yet. The book has helped him understand that there are reasons for some of the things I do when I'm not well, but doesn't provide cop-outs. It helps him support me when i'm not well rather than hide and wonder what is happening. This book makes links between behaviours that I hadn't even realised were part of the illness and has gone a long way to improving our marriage - misunderstanding and lack of communication (due to my embarassment) was killing it. I would highly recommend this book to all who want to understand more, and want to help their partner/loved one.

I found this book quite by accident while looking for something to read at Borders. I was diagnosed as bipolar about a year ago. But in the previous two yearsfore diagnosis, I wrecked my marriage, my finances, was suicidal, and almost bankrupted my company. With medication, good support around me, i am doing much better. Most bipolar people do not think anything is wrong, only that people around them are distressed. My advantage (disadvantage) is that my Dad also developed the disease at midlife and so I know i have the same thing, and that all things i do or say do not always make sense.
I honestly believe that having this book earlier in my condition and having a spouse who used the techniques described, would have saved my marriage and finances.
Excellent Book August 21, 2005 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder has helped a number of people to understand what has been going on in their families. One example is a family where the father and two of the five adult children had Bipolar Disorder. The wives, husbands, brothers and sisters were much better able to cope with the family dynamics after reading this excellent book. These and many other people with Bipolar Spectrum Disorders have never been hospitalised and may not have been diagnosed and/or appropriately treated until late in life. The disorder causes enormous conflict in the family but with understanding comes forgiveness and peace. The information on The Bipolar Conversation is especially helpful.
