5 out of 5 stars A calming read   February 27, 2004
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

I love the idea of a book that helps me become stronger and more courageous, but the best thing about this book is that it has helped me become calmer. As an "idea girl," I always have a lot on my plate and often feel overwhelmed. This book offers great advice for helping me calm down and focus on the task at hand. By doing so, I not only get more done, I feel more balanced.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   January 15, 2004
I stumbled across this book at a bookstore when I wasn't looking for anything like it. I flipped it casually open to a page and that was it, I was hooked. It is 100 short observations about how a warrior views life. It is not about cutting and slashing. It is about being a warrior in day-to-day life. A great visual image and very empowering. The observations are short, to the point and written with a warrior's passion.

A great book. Get it. Read it. Live it.

5 out of 5 stars A great primer on lessons for life   January 1, 2004

Dojo Wisdom by Jennifer Lawler is an interesting book written by a martial arts instructor who has applied her Tae Kwon Do teachings to all areas of her life. There are 100 "lessons" in the book (each 1 to 3 pages long), followed by a paragraph of how you can put those lessons to work in your life. By doing so, you will practice the way of the warrior in all you do. For instance, there were a couple of items that spoke to me. Lesson 3 was Revel In Your Awkwardness As Much As In Your Mastery. In other words, learn to enjoy the learning phase of a new skill. Everyone goes through it, so just enjoy that thrill of learning new skills. As a consultant, you go through that phase with all new clients as you learn their processes. The other lesson was #90 - Frequent Encounters With Fear Make You Strong. Not too long ago, I would have tried to avoid certain activities that I wasn't comfortable with. I feared them. Now, I understand that I need to face those fears in order to grow past them.

A good book, and I recommend it...

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Definition of Warrior Frames this Book   August 7, 2003
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

"Dojo Wisdom" attracted me by its compelling title. It is a simple book, perhaps best taken in daily nuggets like a day book. The exercises are valuable and worthwhile.

I was intriqued by Lawler's definition of "warrior". "Living with courage and integrity. Facing difficulties and dignity, finding joy even in sorry."

My favorite component of the book was the brevity of the chapters (the 100 Simple Ways) and the practical applications of each nugget of wisdom.

I imagine it would be excellent for those who are under time constraints or perhaps as a "waiting in line" book for when you are... naturally.... waiting in line!

5 out of 5 stars already calmer   August 4, 2003

I enjoy learning new ways of thinking about the challenges I face, and Dojo Wisdom inspired me to do more than think. It encouraged me to act. Although I've already read the book several times, I pick it up whenever I'm a bit frustrated, and it seems no matter which page I turn to, there's something there to inspire me.
