Good sound advice March 29, 2008 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was prompted to buy this book after seeing Dr. Laura all over TV. As some others who have posted reviews have said, some of the tenets mentioned in the book have been written about before, but that's true of a LOT of self-help books. I thought this was a simple to read, straightforward guide to taking personal responsibility, which I think can't be stressed enough in today's culture of "blame." I work with young adults, many of whom don't think there's any need to take any responsibility for their actions! While they may not be the ones reading this book, their parents sure should be reading it. And anyone who finds themselves in a rut could benefit from this as well. It's very comfortable to "whine" -- to our families, our friends, and even to ourselves. The hard part is (as Dr. Laura says)to STOP whining, and start taking responsibility for the life you want to lead.
Good reminder to be grateful instead of complaining March 28, 2008 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
"Stop Whining, Start Living" reminds people to appreciate what they have in their lives, rather than focusing on what they don't have. In other words, to be grateful instead of whining.
The book is primarily a collection of conversations she's had from callers on her radio show and letters from people listening to her show. Through these people's stories, she makes her points about -- not blaming others -- giving rather than exclusively focusing on yourself -- avoiding "pity party" talk, etc.
There isn't a lot of new advice in the book, but it is a good reminder to focus on the positive rather than the negative.
A kick in the pants March 28, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Dr. Laura, for anyone who knows her is a tough love kind of gal. I liked this book. It does lack some original ideas as some other readers have noted, but the concept it not to solve problems, but to get you to solve them for yourself. Dr. laura reminds us in various examples that people can be selfish, and that it's easy to fall into deception about what we don't have, when we could use what we do have as resources. I like her approach. She doesn't coddle people, and help them to make excuses. There's not enablement here, and people need that empowerment. It's a motivator.

The shape America is in now...A lot of people whine rather than endure....Our generation is not taught to put one foot in front of the other and keep moving...

I always thought that I was actually 'living'... March 20, 2008 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
What can I say? Well, this book is great. In my life, I have gone through many rollercoasters and sometimes have felt very alone. I have been looking for a good book to read, that will help me with all of my "hurts" in life. This book is the best one yet! I realize that I have been doing a lot of whining, and not much living. I am now more confident in taking on my days and can't wait to begin living! I want to thank Dr. Laura for opening my eyes to a whole new world.
