Save your money July 15, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Save your money since this book is just a rehash of many of the popular books already out on the market. There are no new insights. David Bach and Wayne Dyer's books would be a far better choice.
It's in brackets (Loving Your Life More) July 12, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I met Ariane when she was working for the Boston Consulting Group in London. I was still at the university she had studied at and was interviewing at BCG. I didn't get the job but our meeting sparked a fascinating chain of events in my life...I only talked to Ariane briefly but the next day she came to find me at the university, listened to me, a stranger, moan about my plight and then told me to join her for a walk around London. We talked about life, work, study, travel, finding employment; we brainstormed other options and how my life might be better without the job (how many people put themselves out for strangers like that?).
A few months later when Ariane was traveling through London we met up again. I hadn't found a job and was struggling with my studies. When we said good-bye Ariane announced that she wasn't going to get in touch and didn't want to hear from me until I received the grades I needed. Perhaps, she said, that would help me understand how important it was for me to regain my focus. Then she just walked off. I was stunned but what an effect it had! Eventually I went on to do a Masters in Barcelona and then found a job with another consulting firm in New York. It was perfect and I loved it. A year later Ariane moved to New York after Stanford - I had got back in touch with her via fax (a strange notion, I know). In New York I had the opportunity to really get to know this 'life coach' who had helped me re-frame my thinking so dramatically. I know I'm not the only one with such an 'Ariane story'.
So the book? Well, to me it is Ariane. A reflection of how she lives and what she has seen work in her own life and the many lives she has touched. A reflection of who she is as a person: somebody who helps. When I read non-fiction I'm almost more interested in the authenticity of the author so I thought I'd tell you about how I met Ariane in case you are too. Ariane has always been a change expert and so it is no surprise that the book is finding success and touching people. It can't not because it's authentic.
a must read July 12, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am very grateful for finding this book. Ariane keeps it simple yet challenged me and reminded me that everything I want lies outside of my comfort zone...this book offers tools to making changes powerful and pro active.. not scary. I really enjoyed this book.
A friend along the way... July 12, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The hardest changes in my life had been the ones I thought I was going to have to experience all on my own, but the truth is there was always someone who showed up and help me along the way. This book and what Ariane writes about has become that person. Simple, practical and rich with wisdom from experience, it's like having a friend there beside you reminding you that everything will be ok and that you are not alone. I've passed this book onto several of my friends and family, simply because I don't want them to ever be alone either. You will love this book!
THIS CHANGE IS FOR THE BETTER July 12, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Rarely have I come across a book with as much to offer as The First Thirty Days! As a society we learn early on that change is bad, and often we stay in lousy relationships, or stick with jobs we've outgrown because we fear the unknown.... but reading this book has shifted my perspective, and it most certainly will help you too. This is a brilliant work of compassion and guidance and if you are reading this review keep going because you need to hear me. As a confirmed skeptic, I can honestly report The First Thirty Days has opened my eyes and reminded me that fear, uncertainty and sadness walk hand-in-hand with growth, acceptance and joy if we are able to embrace the void that change represents. Organized in an easy-to-digest series of chapters, The First Thirty Days is first and foremost a how-to guide for anyone going through a heart-ache; divorce, a death in the family, a troubling diagnosis, termination or any other unplanned trauma. It offers tools, insights, lessons, guidance and advice to help you get through the muck and remain intact. It is expertly written, crafted with heart and soul and is artfully constructed to read as if you were talking to a best friend who was helping you get through a tough time. Chapters such as The Change Guarantee, Change Demons, and The Change Muscle underscore the message, which is that change is good and sometimes unavoidable and we really can handle it! As the author expertly reveals early on, if we are able to change our view of change, we will heal - period. Learning that change is a good thing, that it is a part of life and that it happens to everyone was a lifesaver for me. I am going through a divorce and the lessons I've learned in this book have honestly restored my faith in myself. It's almost as if Ariane was sitting with me and talking to me as if WE were friends. The fact that change really can offer me an opportunity for growth and isn't something to stay in bed about, that something good is around the corner just waiting to be embraced is a message that should be shouted from every rooftop. Rejoice, if you're going through a tough time, or know someone who is. If you or a loved one have ever contemplated changing your life in order to have a richer, deeper, safer, more meaningful experience than this book is for you and you will recommend it to friends and family as I am now. Gift yourself with the insights and magic this book offers and you will greet the world with fresh eyes and a new lease on life.
