The Next Best Thing To A Live Class August 18, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
If I could have only one instructional bead and wire jewelry book, BEAD ON A WIRE would be it! I have waited for it to be released for a year and it has exceeded my already high expectations! The photos are clear and gorgeous and the text clear and precise--just like the author's spoken instructions. All the projects, from beginner level to experienced are wonderful! My personal favorite is the incredible spiral bracelet at the end.
In the beginning of the book Sharilyn writes that live classes and videos are the best ways to learn. Having taken 4 classes with her I can unequivocally state that BEAD ON A WIRE comes as close to being there as is possible. Her writing style, like her teaching style, truly goes step by step--never making assumptions about what the reader/student knows. Her book will empower anyone who reads and uses it--even those who, like me, are not naturally gifted at doing things with their hands!
Now, I wish to join my voice to that of another reviewer in urging Sharilyn Miller to do a book on her fabulous RINGS!!
Outstanding - Every Step of the way! August 9, 2005 122 out of 124 found this review helpful
Many other books leave important steps up to the imagination, or show shoddy craftsmanship on the completed pieces. Sharilyn's step by step imagery is near flawless and the completed pieces breathtaking. I am a huge fan of Sharilyn's ethnic inspired jewelry and it warms my heart when someone with so much talent is willing to share their passion for art with others. I was especially taken by the pins and several of the silver link variations.
I noticed that some of Sharilyn's techniques (basic wire wrapping techniques) are a bit different than those of other metal artists, and I find it refreshing to see alternative (and better) ways to achieve the same goal. (For those of us who couldn't make heads or tails out of other artist's tutorials.)
I personally am not a fan of the white handled Lindstrom pliers that Sharilyn favors. I find them too small and hard on my hands. (I use the Swanstrom ergonomic line) When looking to buy tools - pick up one of Rio Grande's Tool Catalogs and take notice of the many different options available. Buy the best that you can afford, and make sure that the tools are the right size for your hands.
For goodness sake, stop reading my ramblings and buy this book! You will not regret adding this wonderful book to your library.
PS - Sharilyn! When will you write us a book showing how to make those wonderful rings?
An Outstanding Book of Inspiration and Instruction August 6, 2005 This book is filled with stunning photographs of gorgeous jewelry designs. Each project is accompanied by stepped-out photographs that are clearly identified, and instructional copy that is easy to understand. Preceding the projects portion of the book is a comprehensive overview of fundamental tips and techniques upon which project ideas are built. I am thrilled to finally have a book that equips me with the tools and inspiration to create fine handcrafted jewelry of my own. It's like having the best workshops from a master teacher right at your fingertips!
Fantastic Book -- Must Have!! August 4, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have just found my new FAVORITE book! Bead on a Wire by Sharilyn Miller is a book that has to be left on your coffee table; you'll look through it over and over again. The jewelry is absolutely gorgeous as is the photography that was done by Sylvia Bissonnette. In the new book Sharilyn has covered a diverse selection of jewelry designs to help stimulate the imagination and take you to a new level. Gone are the lackluster and mundane pieces that are flooding the market today, you'll be destined to create extraordinary works of wearable art after following some of the simple, step by step instructions. Sharilyn encourages you to incorporate the techniques taught in her book along with your own creative style to transform your piece into something of beauty. She gives you the tools, the techniques and the suppliers to accomplish this. I would consider this book to be for the beginner to advances wire jewelry designer; it offers many tips and techniques for the novice, plus techniques and design ideas for the advanced.
